Pitcher Perfect! Brann Gem Leads Softball Sweep Over Brown

PHILADELPHIA - Jennifer Brann was flawless in the circle on Easter Sunday. The junior threw 10 strikeouts en route to the program's second ever perfect game and the University of Pennsylvania softball team (21-14, 11-6 Ivy) to a sweep over Brown on Senior Day.

Notes

* Penn's sweep over Brown is its second sweep over an Ivy League opponent this season.

* Jennifer Brann's perfect game is the second in program history. The first was thrown by Alexis Borden on May 5, 2012 during the South Division playoff against Cornell.

* Sunday marked the 11th career complete game for Brann.

* Brann's perfect game is the 5th to come in seven innings in the NCAA this season.

* Brann's 10 strikeouts matches her career high.

* On Senior Day, Hannah Gibbons knocked in two RBI.

* Jessica England reached base for a 26th consecutive game.

* Clare Sebastianelli's home run was her second of the season and fifth of her career.

How it Happened

The Quakers entered game three after an emotional rollercoaster in game two on Saturday night, winnning in walk-off fashion. In game three, Penn would go for the sweep. Sunday also marked Senior Day for the Red and Blue as head coach Leslie King and the Penn softball program recognized Sarah Cwiertnia, Jessica England, Hannah Gibbons, and Sam Pederson prior to the game.

However, the story of the day though was Brann. A seven-inning perfect game had only ever been done once in Penn softball history. Alexis Borden threw that game - a 4-0 win over Cornell in the South Division playoff to send the Quakers to the Ivy League Championship Series.

Jennifer Brann came out throwing with purpose right out the gates on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Penn Park. Brann struck out back-to-back batters to retire the opening frame. Singles from Sarah Cwiertnia and Emma Nedley loaded the bases for the Quakers in the home-half, but a fly-out to left field left the bases loaded.

After back-to-back strikeouts in the third from Brann, the Quaker bats responded. Jessica England led off with a double through the left side and Cwiertnia was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Lucy Yang singled to break the scoreless tie, bringing home England, and then Hannah Gibbons cleared the bases with a double of her own to put the Quakers up, 3-0.

Brann didn't complete the feat without a little help from her defense. The Quakers were flawless in the field and made a few big plays when needed such as Lucy Yang's leaping grab at third base to secure perfection. In the fourth it was England and Cwiertnia who fielded grounders to keep Brown from answering the Penn scoring.

Three-straight strikeouts in the fifth made it eight on the day for Brann and once again the Quaker bats came up big for their pitcher. Saturday night's hero, Corrie Phillips, doubled to put a runner on second and then Clare Sebastianelli came in to pinch hit for Sarah Ketring and blasted her second home run of the season - a two-run shot to give the Quakers a 5-0 lead.

Two more swinging strikeouts for Brann brought her total into double digits in the sixth. She would head to the seventh three outs away from history. Facing the top of the order for a third time, Brann forced a ground-out to Sam Pederson at second base to put one out on the board. A fly-out and hustle play to Kayla Ketring in right field put two away and perfection within grasp. Finally, a pop up and leaping grab by Yang on the 1-0 pitch secured the perfect game as the Penn dugout stormed the field to congratulate their pitcher.

What's Next

The Quakers will cross to the other side of Market Street on Thursday for a clash with Drexel before playing Columbia on the road next weekend to wrap up Ivy League play.
