How it Happened
The Quakers entered Saturday looking to make up some ground in the Ivy League standings. The game didn't start the way they would have liked. A solo home run from Annie Scarangella broke the scoreless tie and then a two run home run by Elayna Tsiouplis made it a three-run inning for the Bears as the Quakers went down, 3-0.
Penn was unable to answer in the home-half of the second, but a
Kayla Ketring solo home run cut the deficit to two.
Emma Nedley and
Corrie Phillips recorded back-to-back singles in the fourth before
Sarah Ketring hit a three-run homer of her own to give the Red and Blue the lead, 4-3.
After the two home runs,
Julia Longo settled in nicely in the circle. The freshman ended the game, throwing five straight scoreless innings and retiring seven straight batters between the third and fifth innings.
Phillips singled in the fifth to bring in Nedley as the freshman scored her second run of the game to put the QUakers up, 5-3.
Jessica England made it 6-3 in the sixth, bringing in Pederson on a single to left field.
With a runner on third and one out, Longo caught the batter swinging to put a second out on the board and then the pitcher fielded a ground ball and threw to first to get the game's final out.
Game two of the evening ended up being a tightly contested slugfest as well. The two teams traded singles in the first, but the game remained scoreless. 12 of the next 13 batters were retired as the game entered the fourth inning.
Like in game one, it was Brown who broke the scoreless tie and again it did it with a home run. Cat Seitz hit a solo shot to left field in the fifth to put the first run of the game on the board. Back-to-back Penn errors put runners on first and second before
Tabitha Dyer took over for
Jennifer Brann in the circle. The sophomore lefty walked her second batter to load the bases, but forced a ground out the second base to get out of the jam with just one run scored.
Penn answered in the bottom of the frame. Freshman
Julia Schneider led off with a double and then took advantage of a Brown throwing error to come home and score.
After four scoreless innings, Brown kept the scoring going in the sixth. After escaping the fifth, Dyer put runners on second and third to lead off the inning. The lefty was replaced by
Abigail Abramson. The Bears brought a run across on a wild pitch and then a two-out RBI single found the Quakers trailing, 3-1.
Like they did the inning prior, the Red and Blue answered the Bears in the following frame.
Lucy Yang and Nedley tallied back-to-back singles put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt advanced Yang and Nedley and then a sacrifice fly from Schneider brought a run across to cut the deficit to one.
Abramson kept the Quakers within one as she got out of the top of the seventh unscathed. With one last chance to tie or take the lead, Penn went back to the top of the order after a
Kayla Ketring lead-off single got the rally going. Pederson advanced Ketring with a sacrifice bunt and then England reached via error to put the game winning run at first.
Sarah Cwiertnia loaded the bases with a single to right field before Yang popped out to put the Quakers on their final out. Penn finally tied it after Nedley beat the throw from the shortstop to first on an infield single. With the game knotted up at three runs apiece, Phillips placed a blooper over the first baseman who was unable to make the play as England came in to score and win the game, 4-3, for Penn.
