NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team earned its first Ivy League win of the season after defeating Yale, 4-1, on Saturday. The Quakers close out the season on Sunday against Brown.
How it Happened
Penn got off to a slow start on the road in its second to last Ivy League match of the season. The Quakers fell at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as Yale took the doubles point and would head into singles with a 1-0 advantage.
Kyle Mautner and
Edoardo Graziani fell, 6-4, while
Dmitry Shatalin and
Kevin Zhu lost, 6-3.
In singles, the Quakers came back strong. Penn took four of the six singles matches, including three in straight sets. Mautner got the Red and Blue off to a strong start at the top singles spot. The senior won 6-4 in the first set before edging out the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6. Graziani won via the same scoreline as the freshman also edged out a tough second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), to win in straight sets.
Max Cancilla earned a win at No. 6. Cancilla got a late break in the first set to win, 7-5, before taking the second, 6-4. Senior
Dmitry Shatalin came back after losing the first set, 6-4, to win the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). Shatalin took that momentum into the decider as he went on to win, 6-0, in the third.
