PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive Ivy League victory on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout of Columbia.
Despite two rain delays and moving the match to the indoor courts at Hecht Tennis Center, Penn started strong in doubles and never looked back with consistent singles play to improve to 3-2 in league play.
Penn's top doubles team of Marta Kowalska and Marija Curnic, the 48th-ranked team in the nation, fell 6-4, but Nos. 2 and 3 came through with comfortable performances to clinch the point for the 12th straight match. Iuliia Bryzgalova and OJ Singh moved to 14-1 as a pair this spring at No. 2 and Ashley Zhu and Carolyn Xie won at No. 3, 6-3.
In singles, Bryzgalova, the 92nd-ranked singles player in the nation, won the first set 6-1 pretty easily but had to battle to close it out in the second set, 7-5. Moments later, Curnic won at No. 4 with a steady, solid match, winning 6-3, 6-2. To secure the win, Singh pulled away to a comfortable 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5.
