Box Score 2 New York, N.Y. - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team dropped two Ivy League matches over the weekend. The Quakers fell to Cornell, 5-2, on Friday before falling to No. 16 Columbia on Sunday, 7-0.
How it Happened
Playing their final home match of the season, the Quakers were without their No. 1 player,
Kyle Mautner, due to illness. Penn fell at No. 1 and No. 2 to start the day off doubles.
Dmitry Shatalin and
Kevin Zhu lost 6-3 while
Edoardo Graziani and
Aleks Huryn suffered a late break of serve to go down, 6-4.
The Quakers went on to take two of the six singles in the eventual 5-2 defeat to Cornell in their final home match of the season. Graziani earned the win at No. 1 singles, winning in a tiebreaker at 2-2 in the third.
Max Cancilla earned a straight set win at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3.
The Quakers wrapped up the weekend against No. 16 Columbia. In doubles, the Red and Blue lost two of the three matches in a tiebreaker. At No. 1, Graziani and Mautner fell 7-6 (3) to the No. 26 ranked Jack Lin and William Matheson. Shatalin and Zhu fell in a tiebreaker as well, 7-6 (4) as the Quakers lost the doubles point.
In singles, No. 79 Mautner went up against No. 39 Victor Pham. The Penn senior lost the opening set, 6-1, but played much stronger in the second. However, a late break of serve went to Pham as Mautner fell, 6-1, 7-5.
At No. 4 singles, Shatalin manged to force a deciding 10-point tiebreaker. The senior dropped the opening set, 7-6 (5), before bouncing back to take the second, 6-3. Due to the match already being decided, the two players would play a 10-point tiebreak where Shatalin fell short, 10-5.
What's Next
The Quakers will close out the Ivy League schedule next weekend at Yale and Brown.
