ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team picked up an important win on Friday afternoon, defeating Cornell 5-0.
The improbable run of doubles success continued on Friday as Penn snatched the all-important doubles tally for the 11th consecutive match, winning at Nos. 2 and 3, while taking a 5-4 lead at No. 1. Iuliia Bryzgalova and OJ Singh took the win at No. 2 in convincing fashion, cruising to a 6-2 victory. Behind Marta Kowalska and Marija Curnic, Penn's top doubles team, who are the 48th-ranked group in the country, Bryzgalova and Singh have had a fantastic season at No. 2. With the win, they improved to 13-1 this spring.
Carolyn Xie and Ashley Zhu, a formidable pair at No. 3, won again at Cornell, 6-3, improving to 5-2 in 2019.
Singles were more of the same for Penn, cruising to three more wins and six dominating performances. Bryzgalova, the 91st-ranked singles player in the nation, was the first to finish, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-2. The freshman is now 12-1 in 2019 and 25-3 overall during her rookie campaign. Curnic and Mimi Levine, playing No. 6, weren't far behind, closing out their wins within seconds of one another. Singh also finished, winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5.
