Box Score 1 DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 23 University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip on Thursday. The Quakers fell to Duke, 6-1, to wrap up their trip with a 2-3 record. Penn will return to Hecht Tennis Center on Sunday for a double-header against Clemson and Drexel.
How it Happened
The Quakers fell in a close match on Wednesday against UNC-Charlotte. Penn fell in the doubles point losing at the number two and three spots.
Dmitry Shatalin tied the match up at 1-1 with a straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 victory at number four singles.
Edoardo Graziani lost a close three-setter, falling 7-5 in the third after splitting the opening two sets and the
Kevin Zhu lost two close sets as the Red and Blue fell behind, 3-1.
Jason Hildebrandt came through, 6-2, in the third to bring Penn back within one, but after a loss by
Kyle Mautner at the tops singles spot, UNC-Charlotte clinched the match.
The Red and Blue bounced back on Thursday against UNC-Wilmington. After losing at number three doubles, the Quakers took first and second doubles in two tiebreakers.
Aleks Huryn and
Robert Smithline won 8-6 in the tiebreak to tie up the doubles while Shatalin and Graziani pulled away to win, 7-3, and secure the doubles point.
Graziani expanded the Penn lead to 2-0 after a straight-forward, 6-4, 6-4 win at number one singles.
Noah Makarome won an epic tiebreaker in the first set in his match, taking it 15-13. The sophomore took that momentum into the second set as he completed his straight sets victory, winning 6-1 to put the Quakers up 3-0. After trading 6-4 sets, Shatalin took the third set in his match, 6-3, to clinch the match for the Quakers.
Penn fell in their match on their trip on Friday, falling 6-1 to Duke.
Dmitry Shatalin took the only match for the Quakers at number three singles, winning 10-6 in a third-set tiebreaker.
