PHILADELPHIA - Fresh off playing three-straight ranked opponents, the newly minted sixth-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team will return to Ivy League play, hosting Cornell at Penn Park on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
Series History
Penn owns a 30-17 lead in the all-time series with Cornell and last year broke a two-game losing streak to the Big Red with an 11-4 victory in Ithaca.
Keepin' It 100
Junior midfield
Erin Barry has eclipsed the 100 mark in both ground balls and draw controls this season. She is the first in the
Karin Corbett-era to do so, now owning 113 draw controls and 104 ground balls.
Lending a Helping Hand
One of Penn's catalysts on offense this season has been through the assist-making prowess of junior
Gabby Rosenzweig. The New York native leads the team with 27 assists (the next closest has nine) and ranks fourth nationally, averaging 3.38 assists per game.
Big Play Belodeau
Need a goal in a big moment? Look no further than
Zoe Belodeau. The sophomore sensation has already recorded two game-winning scores for the Quakers this year, both against ranked teams. Belodeau scored the game's final goal in wins over #21 Georgetown and #15 Duke.
Ball Stoppin'
Mikaila Cheeseman has featured an impressive success rate in goal for the Red and Blue, ranking third in the nation with a .539 save percentage. The junior has been an anchor for a Penn defense that ranks seventh in scoring defense in the NCAA, allowing under eight goals a game.
Three Quakers on Tewaaraton Watch List
Erin Barry,
Zoe Belodeau and
Gabby Rosenzweig all saw their names on the first Tewaaraton Watch List of the year, highlighting the nation's best players in college lacrosse. Rosenzweig, one of the final 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees last year, currently leads the team offensively with 16 goals and 27 assists for 43 points. Belodeau ranks second on the team in points on the season with 27, while Barry is third with 17 and ranks second with 19 ground balls.
Success in Clutch Moments
Already becoming a theme of the year is Penn's strong play in tense moments. Whether it be coming back from a two-goal deficit and winning in overtime to Johns Hopkins, recovering from a 4-0 hole against Drexel, or grinding out one-goal wins over Georgetown and Duke, the Quakers have stepped up big when they needed it most, behind solid play from Rosenzweig, Belodeau, Barry and Cheeseman.
Good Times in Overtime
The Quakers have already notched a dramatic victory in overtime this season, defeating No. 17 Johns Hopkins 11-10 in Baltimore. The win was Coach
Karin Corbett's 53rd victory over a ranked opponent, as Penn rallied from down two in the second half, holding the Bluejays scoreless for nearly 22 minutes to take the lead, before winning on a free position goal from Barry in the extra period.
High Rankings, High Expectations
The Quakers entered 2019 ranked 10th in the preseason IWLCA poll and have moved up to their highest mark for two-straight weeks. Additionally, Penn started the year No. 7 nationally in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll, and has slid up to fifth, while the Quakers check in at No. 5 in the Inside Lacrosse poll.
A Tradition of Success
Penn has won 11 of the last 12 Ivy League championships, including three conference tournament titles, and have advanced to 12-straight NCAA Tournaments, the fifth-longest active streak in the country.
Aye, Aye Captain(s)!
Senior defenders
Katy Junior and
Lauren O'Mara have been tabbed as captains for the 2019 campaign of Penn women's lacrosse.
Concerning Cornell
The Big Red enter Saturday's clash with an overall record of 4-3, but a perfect 2-0 mark in Ivy League play owning wins over Harvard and Columbia. Cornell is on a one-game losing streak after stumbling at home, 14-2, against 17th-ranked Stony Brook last weekend. The Big Red were picked to finish fourth in Ancient Eight according to the league's preseason poll and are led by 29 points from Caroline Allen. Allen and senior defender Hannah O'Reilly are each returning All-Ivy honorees for Cornell. In goal, Katie McGahan owns three wins and a .506 save percentage.
