#8 Women's Lacrosse Visits #2 Maryland in Clash of Unbeatens

PHILADELPHIA - Holding true at No. 8 in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll and continuing as one of the nation's last eight remaining unbeaten teams, the University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team will face a formidable foe on Wednesday evening, making the trek to College Park for a showdown with the second-ranked Maryland Terrapins. Opening draw is slated for 5 p.m.

Series History
Maryland owns a 24-2 lead in the all-time series with the Quakers, as the two teams have met each of the past nine years in the regular season, in addition to matchups in the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2014. Penn is seeking its first ever win in College Park, Md. and its first overall against the Terps since a 9-7 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Tournament at Franklin Field.

Undefeated
The Quakers are one of just eight remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA at 6-0. The perfect start through six games is Penn's second-straight year doing so and sixth in program history.

Lending a Helping Hand
One of Penn's catalysts on offense this season has been through the assist-making prowess of junior Gabby Rosenzweig. The New York native leads the team with 22 assists (the next closest has nine) and ranks third nationally, averaging 3.67 assists per game.

Defensively Dominant
Penn has been able to rely on its defense in its 6-0 start to the season, currently ranking fourth nationally, allowing only 6.67 goals per game. Much of this is the strength of Penn's starting backline, including Katy Junior, Chelsea Kibler and Lauren O'Mara, as well as a stout performance in goal so far this year by junior netminder Mikaila Cheeseman. Cheeseman currently leads the nation with a .622 save percentage and ranks fourth in the country with a 6.73 GAA.

Big Time Belodeau
A year removed from the most decorated freshman season in program history, Zoe Belodeau featured a standout performance last time out against the Hoyas, playing a role in seven of Penn's eight goals on the day with five scores herself and two assists.

Three Quakers on Tewaaraton Watch List
Erin Barry, Zoe Belodeau and Gabby Rosenzweig all saw their names on the first Tewaaraton Watch List of the year, highlighting the nation's best players in college lacrosse. Rosenzweig, one of the final 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees last year, currently leads the team offensively with 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points. Belodeau ranks second on the team in points on the season with 24, while Barry is third with 12 and ranks second with 12 ground balls.

Success in Clutch Moments
Already becoming a theme of the year is Penn's strong play in tense moments. Whether it be coming back from a two-goal deficit and winning in overtime to Johns Hopkins, recovering from a 4-0 hole against Drexel, or grinding out a one-goal win over Georgetown, the Quakers have stepped up big when they needed it most, behind solid play from Rosenzweig, Belodeau, Barry and Cheeseman.

Good Times in Overtime
The Quakers have already notched dramatic victory in overtime this season, defeating No. 17 Johns Hopkins 11-10 in Baltimore. The win was Coach Karin Corbett's 53rd victory over a ranked opponent, as Penn rallied from down two in the second half, holding the Bluejays scoreless for nearly 22 minutes to take the lead, before winning on a free position goal from Barry in the extra period.

High Rankings, High Expectations
The Quakers entered 2019 ranked 10th in the preseason IWLCA poll and have moved up to No. 8 for two-straight weeks. Additionally, Penn started the year No. 7 nationally in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll, and has slid up to fifth, while the Quakers check in at No. 6 in the Inside Lacrosse poll.

A Tradition of Success
Penn has won 11 of the last 12 Ivy League championships, including three conference tournament titles, and have advanced to 12-straight NCAA Tournaments, the fifth-longest active streak in the country.

Aye, Aye Captain(s)!
Senior defenders Katy Junior and Lauren O'Mara have been tabbed as captains for the 2019 campaign of Penn women's lacrosse.

Making Sense of Maryland
The Terps enter Wednesday's contest similar to Penn, unbeaten at 6-0 with three wins over ranked teams, including two in overtime. The 13-time national champions are led by five players with at least 12 points on the year, including a team-high 25 from senior Jen Giles, owning 18 goals and seven assists. Megan Taylor has earned all six wins in goal for the Terps, with a GAA of 8.74 and the nation's fourth-best save percentage of 0.549. Maryland owns one of the nation's most stout home field advantages, owning 80-straight wins in College Park.
