PHILADELPHIA - A successful three-game road swing to start the year brings the 12th-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team back to familiar territory inside Franklin Field at 3-0 for both its Ivy League and home opener. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
Series History
The Quakers are 23-18-1 all-time against the Bulldogs and have been dominant of late, winning 14 straight over the Bulldogs. Yale has not won at Franklin Field since 2003.
Ivy League Openers
Head Coach
Karin Corbett is 13-6 in Ivy League openers in her time with the Red and Blue, and Penn has won 13 of its last 14 lidlifters against Ivy opponents. Saturday's game is the first time Penn is playing Yale to start Ivy League play since 2009.
Three Quakers on Tewaaraton Watch List
Erin Barry,
Zoe Belodeau and
Gabby Rosenzweig all saw their names on the first Tewaaraton Watch List of the year, highlighting the nation's best players in college lacrosse. Rosenzweig, one of the final 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees last year, currently leads the team offensively with nine points and nine assists for 18 points. Belodeau ranks second on the team in points on the season with 11, while
Erin Barry is a perfect 5-for-5 on shot attempts this year and is tied for the team lead with eight ground balls.
Quakers Sweep Weekly Awards
Penn posted a clean sweep of the Ivy League weekly awards following its 11-10 overtime win at Johns Hopkins, as
Gabby Rosenzweig earned Offensive Player of the Week, while
Mikaila Cheeseman was named Defensive Player of the Week. Rosenzweig led Penn's offense at JHU, recording seven points on three goals and four assists, playing a part in four of Penn's final five scores. Cheeseman helped Penn hang around long enough to take the lead, finishing with 12 saves.
Quakers Looking to Crawford
After scoring just four times in 12 games as a freshman,
Laura Crawford has emerged as a potent offensive threat this season for Penn, ranking third on the team with six goals this season. Last game at Rutgers, Crawford netted a career-high three goals on four shot attempts.
Lock Down D
The Quakers currently rank tied for fourth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 6.33 goals per game in three games played. Penn was especially dominant against Rutgers, allowing only two goals from the Scarlet Knights until over halfway through the second half.
Impact Freshmen
A pair of freshmen have stepped from the first draw for the Quakers, as both
Michaela McMahon and
Taylyn Stadler have started all three games this season. Both have scored at least one goal in each game for Penn, while Stadler posted a hat trick in Penn's 15-5 victory over Rutgers on Tuesday.
High Rankings, High Expectations
The Quakers entered 2019 ranked 10th in the preseason IWLCA poll and have moved to 12th after early week shuffling. Additionally, Penn started the year No. 7 nationally in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll, and has slid up to sixth after the first two weeks of play. The Quakers checked in at No. 13 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason top-20 and are now number eight.
Good Times in Overtime
The Quakers have already notched dramatic victory in overtime last weekend, defeating No. 17 Johns Hopkins 11-10 in Baltimore. The win was Coach
Karin Corbett's 53rd victory over a ranked opponent, as Penn rallied from down two in the second half, holding the Bluejays scoreless for nearly 22 minutes to take the lead, before winning on a free position goal from Barry in the extra period.
Dominating Start
Penn opened the season with a thorough performance on the road at Delaware, taking down the Blue Hens 15-4. The Quakers received a balanced attack offensively, featuring eight different goal scorers, while causing 12 turnovers and picking up 20 ground balls.
Erin Barry and
Zoe Belodeau led the way offensively as each tallied five points. Junior
Mikaila Cheeseman made nine saves in the win.
A Tradition of Success
Penn has won 11 of the last 12 Ivy League championships, including three conference tournament titles, and have advanced to 12-straight NCAA Tournaments, the fifth-longest active streak in the country.
