Wrestling Falls At No. 10 Cornell

ITHACA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team ran into a tenacious No. 10 Cornell squad as the Big Red scored bonus points in six matches to hand the Quakers their first Ivy League loss of the season, 40-3.

The Big Red lined up five Top-20 wrestlers and each recorded a win. Penn's lone win came from its own Top-20 wrestler in Anthony Artalona who scored a 3-1 win in overtime at 149 pounds. Penn's lineup was altered from its usual look, with illness forcing standout freshman Carmen Ferrante to sit out at 125 pounds and regular starters Joe Oliva (157) and Grant Aronoff (141) also not able to compete.

Cornell opened the dual with three wins in a row from ranked wrestlers, building a 13-0 lead. No. 11 Vitali Arujau connected on a takedown at the buzzer to secure a technical fall over Blair Orr, followed by a 3-2 decision by No. 13 Chas Tucker at 133 pounds over Doug Zapf.

Defending national champion and No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis picked up a first period technical fall over A.J. Vindici at 141 to give the Big Red the big lead.

No. 13 Anthony Artalona got Penn on the board at 149, connecting on a slick takedown in overtime to knock off Jonathan Furnas, 3-1. The Big Red headed into halftime with a 19-3 lead following a pin from Adam Santoro over Willy Kaiser at 4:06.

Cornell won all five matches in the second half, led by a pin at 1:00 by returning All-American No. 14 Brandon Womack at 174 pounds. No. 14 Ben Honis added a technical fall at 197, defeating Greg Bensley, 16-1. At 165 pounds, Evan DeLuise was edged by Andrew Berreyesa, 3-2, the deciding point a hands to the face call on DeLuise in the first period.

The Quakers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Columbia in New York City at 4 p.m.
