NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team wrapped up a successful ECAC Championship with a shutout victory over Brown in the third-place match on Sunday afternoon.
Penn, who entered as the No. 6 seed despite an undefeated record, bounced third-seeded Harvard in the opening round before falling to Columbia in the semifinals, but concluded the three-day tournament with a convincing win over the Bears.
The Quakers were able to snatch the crucial doubles point when Marta Kowalska and Marija Curnic won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3 and Iuliia Bryzgalova and OJ Singh matched that with a 6-2 victory.
Bryzgalova got things rolling in singles competition by cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 win, staying undefeated in both singles and doubles play in 2019. The freshman is now 19-2 in singles throughout her rookie campaign and hasn't dropped a set since the turn of the calendar. Kowalska lost just a pair games en route to a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Ashley Zhu clinched Penn's fifth victory of the season with a straight-set win at 6-2, 6-2. Singh and Mimi Levine, playing at No. 5 and 6, respectively, each took the first sets of their matches, but the match was decided before they finished.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Penn is not in action again until Saturday, Feb. 23 when it hits the road to take on William & Mary and then Old Dominion on Sunday, Feb. 24. The Quakers don't play at Hecht Tennis Center again until March 16 when they host Temple.
