PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team is enjoying a promising start to the 2019 season, dismantling both Delaware and Drexel while dropping just a single set, and will look for its first 3-0 start since the 2014-15 season on Sunday, Feb. 3 against Marist at Hecht Tennis Center.
Doubles matches will begin at 11 a.m.
Five Quakers have maneuvered through the opening two matches undefeated in both singles and doubles competition, led by Iuliia Bryzgalova at No. 1 singles. The freshman waltzed to a pair of straight-set wins, defeating the Blue Hens' top player 6-3, 6-0 and the Dragons' best 6-2, 6-1, and is now 15-2 in her debut season. Marta Kowalska, Penn's No. 2, earned a pair of wins, while also teaming with Marija Curnic for two doubles wins at No. 1.
Ashley Zhu won at both No. 3 and No. 4 in singles, and plays in the No. 3 doubles slot along with Mimi Levine, who is 1-0 at No. 6 singles. OJ Singh also hasn't dropped a set in singles play at No. 5, and is 2-0 with Bryzgalova at No. 2 doubles.
The Quakers have dropped just a single set through two matches and their only loss came when Curnic was forced to retire due to injury.
MATCHING UP WITH MARIST
Sunday will mark the first ever meeting between Penn and Marist. The Red Foxes arrive in University City 1-2 and on a two-match losing streak after a 7-0 loss to Boston College and a 5-2 defeat to Harvard. Marist's win came in a 7-0 triumph over Monmouth.
