PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team had no trouble in its first game back after fall-term exams on Saturday, rolling past Division 3 Widener 105-57 at The Palestra. It was the Quakers' first game in 17 days.
Penn placed five players in double figures on the day, the second time that has happened this season.
Penn improved to 6-4 with the win, while Widener—which is undefeated in 10 games against Division 3 competition—lost its second straight game to Division 1 competition.
Notes
*This was Penn's 37th 100-point game all-time, and the first since last year's 112-63 win over Stockton.
*Penn set records for three-point shots made (17) and taken (40) in a game. The previous record of 16 treys made in a game happened twice before (1/28/2001 vs. Drexel, 2/21/2003 vs. Harvard).
*For the fourth time in the last six games, Penn shot better than 50 percent from the field overall (37-67, 55.2 percent) and better than 40 percent from long distance (17-40, 42.5 percent).
*Penn had 21 assists, the fourth straight game the Quakers have had 20 or more assists (22.3 assists per game in that span).
*Penn had 57 rebounds, a team high in the
Steve Donahue coaching era, and the Quakers' +32 rebound margin also was a high in the Donahue era.
*Senior
Ryan Betley led Penn with 20 points, his third 20-point game across Penn's last six outings and his 13th with the Quakers.
*Freshman
Max Martz scored 19 points which was a season/career high, and for the second time in three games he knocked down five three-point shots.
*Freshman
Lucas Monroe had his first collegiate double-double, setting season/career highs in both points (13) and rebounds (13); he became the fifth different player on the current roster to record at least one double-double while at Penn (also Brodeur, Betley, Scott and Washington).
*Sophomore
Bryce Washington had 11 points on Saturday, one shy of his season high set at Lafayette; it was his second double-figure scoring game this season.
*Senior
Devon Goodman had his fifth straight double-figure scoring game with 10 points.
*Sophomore
Griffin Ryan scored his first collegiate points, going for a hoop-and-harm three-point play in the first half and then knocking down a trey in the second half.
*Freshman
Max Lorca-Lloyd played 11 minutes on Saturday and they were productive as he threw down three slam dunks for his six points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished off two nice assists.
How It Happened
Penn was up 5-4 early, then used a pair of 9-0 runs to blow out to a 25-8 lead to take away any drama from the day. The second run was fueled by a trio of three-point baskets,
Max Martz sandwiching two around
Devon Goodman's long-distance dial. Penn's lead grew larger than 20 points with more than six minutes left in the first half, and it was 50-23 at the break.
The second half was about using different combinations and getting players some minutes.
AJ Brodeur and
Ryan Betley played the first four minutes and then sat the rest of the way.
