The Penn-UCF Series
• The Quakers and the Knights are meeting for the third time in men's basketball.
• The teams have split the first two meetings, both of which took place at UCF's campus.
UCF beat Penn, 64-61, on December 29, 2008 in the UCF Holiday Classic; and the Quakers returned the favor with a 58-49 win on December 12, 2016.
•
AJ Brodeur was a freshman in the 2016 win. He scored 10 points against the Knights' 7-foot-6 center, Tacko Fall—Brodeur's seventh straight double-figure scoring game at the time—and also filled the box with six rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists and three steals.
Penn and Exempt Events
• This is the third straight year Penn has played in an exempt event; the Quakers competed in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Fort Myers, Fla., during the 2017-18 season and went to the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands last year.
Last week, Penn was announced as part of the 2020 Myrtle Beach Invitational field.
A Bit About AJ Brodeur
• The senior enters the Wooden Legacy with 30 straight double-figure scoring games, the fifth-longest streak in program history...
Ernie Beck, 74 from 1951-53
Stan Pawlak, 60 from 1964-66
Ron Haigler, 41 from 1974-75
Keven McDonald, 38 from 1977-78
AJ Brodeur, 30 in 2019
Jeff Neuman, 25 in 1966
• AJ has started all 97 games played during his career; his streak of starts is currently the 10th-longest at the NCAA Division 1 level.
Penn by the Numbers
1.000 • Penn's win percentage against Power 5/Big East teams in its last four such games; the wins have come against Miami (ACC), Villanova (BE), Alabama (SEC), and Providence (BE).
1 • Among the program's 1,793 all-time wins, the number that have taken place on an SEC opponent's home court; that happened in the season opener, when Penn won at Alabama 81-80.
1.31 • Penn's assist/turnover ratio the last two games (34 assists/26 turnovers); it was 0.78 (31/40) through the Quakers' first three games.
2:23 • Amount of time it took freshman
Max Martz to score the first seven points of his collegiate career last Tuesday at Lafayette; he ended the night with 10 points, all in the first half.
3 • All-Ivy players who return to Penn's lineup in 2019-20: senior captains
AJ Brodeur, (two-time unanimous first-team All-Ivy),
Ryan Betley (second-team All-Ivy in 2017-18), and
Devon Goodman (second-team in 2018-19).
4 • Double-doubles by Brodeur through five games this season.
5 • Three-point baskets scored by Betley last Saturday at Providence, high for a Penn player this season.
7.5 • Seconds left when freshman
Jordan Dingle hit a shot in the lane to give Penn its winning points at Alabama.
8:30 • Amount of game time (in the final 9:14) that Dingle needed to score 14 of his 16-second half points at Providence.
10 • Penn players who have recorded at least one double-figure scoring game during their career; that includes six players with at least one game of 20 or more points and four with double-doubles (Brodeur, Betley,
Eddie Scott,
Bryce Washington).
10 • The number of NCAA Division 1 players who finished the 2018-19 season with at least 500 points, 250 rebounds and 100 assists.
That list included guys like R.J. Barrett (Duke), Grant Williams (Tennessee) and Ethan Happ (Wisconsin). It also included Brodeur, who led Penn with 547 points, 257 rebounds and 113 assists.
10.1 • Points-per-game improvement by Goodman from 2017-18 (3.8 ppg) to last year (13.9); he was one of just five players nationally at Division 1 to make the double-digit jump in ppg.
10.2 • Brodeur's rebounds-per-game average through five games this season;
a small sample size, for sure, but the last Penn player to have a double-digit rebound average for a season was Ron Haigler way back in 1973-74 (10.6).
11 • Three-pointers hit by Penn in each of its last two games; it took the Quakers 33 attempts to reach that at Lafayette, but just 22 at Providence.
17.0 • Betley's points-per game average over Penn's last three games (18 vs. La Salle, 11 at Lafayette, 22 at Providence).
20 • Assists by Brodeur this season, nearly double the next Penn player (Goodman has 11).
24 • Points scored by Dingle at Alabama, most ever by a Penn freshman in his collegiate debut; he followed that up with 20 points at Rice.
43 • Overall wins by Penn during the previous two seasons, 24 in 2017-18 and 19 in 2018-19; that is the most since the Quakers had 47 wins across the 2001-02 (25) and 2002-03 (22) seasons.
53 • Steals by Goodman last year; his 1.7 thefts per game led all Ivy League players.
Goodman also tied for the league lead in overall minutes played per game, at 35.5.
100 • If he starts and plays in all three games this weekend, Brodeur will reach the century mark in career starts/games.
