PHILADELPHIA – After eclipsing the 20-point mark for the second time in the first four games of her career with the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, Kayla Padilla was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The award is Padilla's second in a row, the first Quaker to win in back-to-back weeks since Eleah Parker won four consecutive awards – and seven times overall – as a freshman during the 2017-18 campaign.
Last week, Penn began college basketball's most storied tradition with a 55-45 triumph at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday night, led by Padilla's 22 points in her Big 5 debut. The freshman was the only Quaker in double figures, hit two of Penn's four 3-pointers and was huge down the stretch with seven fourth-quarter points; she also added two steals, two blocks, an assist and a rebound.
After four games, Padilla is in the upper echelon of the Ivy League in a myriad of categories. She leads the Ancient Eight in points per game (18.8) and assist-to-turnover ratio (4.0); she's second in 3-point field goals per game (2.5); is fourth in 3-point field-goal percentage (.370); and is one of just five players in the league to surpass the 22-point mark more than once this season.
Her 75 points through four games is the most for a freshman at Penn since Diana Caramanico totaled 83 in 1997-98.
At 4-0, the Quakers are off to their best start in program history while piling up three wins of 30 or more points and all in double-digit fashion. The Red and Blue's 306 points through four games are the most in program history. On the defensive end, Penn has smothered opposing teams all season, ranking fourth in the country in scoring defense at just 45.5 ppg and its scoring margin of 31.0 is tops in the Ivies and inside the nation's top 20.
This week, the Quakers head to Durham, N.C. for a dance with Duke on Friday, Nov. 29 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
