PHILADELPHIA – The home team prevailed.
The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team had 16 wrestlers finish in the top eight, with two claiming individual championships to lead #TheMovement to its first team title at the Keystone Classic since 2010.
Freshman No. 11
Michael Colaiocco won the 125-pound championship, while sophomore
Doug Zapf claimed the 141-pound crown. Overall, 14 of Penn's 16 placewinners at their home tournament were underclassmen.
Colaiocco, the top seed at 125, made quite an impression in his Palestra debut, picking up a pin and a major decision en route to his first collegiate tournament title. In the championship match, he knocked off Virginia's Patrick McCormick, 10-2. A pair of takedowns in the first period built a 4-1 lead, and Colaiocco added a takedown in each of the final two periods for the win.
At 141 pounds, a pair of Quakers battled for the crown as Zapf had to contend with teammate AJ Vindici in the final. Zapf led, 3-1, after two periods and extended his lead to 8-3 in the final frame for the win.
The Quakers had finalists at the first three weights, as sophomore
Carmen Ferrante finished runner-up for the second year in a row following a second-place finish at 125 last season. This year, he gutted out a 3-1 win in sudden victory over Rider's Richie Koehler in the semifinals before 2018 NCAA quarterfinalist Louie Hayes of Virginia found a late takedown to escape with a 3-1 decision of his own in the title match.
Overall on the day, the Quakers wrestled 104 matches and secured bonus points in 20 of them. Penn needed every single one of those bonus points to build its team score of 152.5 and to stave off Rider who was second with 149 points. While every match matters, there was no doubt that
Cole Urbas' pin of Drexel's Bryan McLaughlin at 6:58 in the third place match at 197 pounds was vital. Those bonus points have the Quakers just enough cushion to pick up the team trophy.
Sophomore No. 7
Anthony Artalona picked up bonus points in his first three matches to reach the semifinal before suffering a 3-2 loss to No. 24 Matt Zovistoski of Appalachian State. He would rebound with two wins in overtime, including a 2-1 victory over Drexel's Parker Kropman in a tiebreaker to decide the third place match.
