PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team has announced its 2020 spring schedule, following a successful fall season. The Quakers will look to continue their rise, after winning 18 matches in 2019, the most for the program since 2005 (22). The spring schedule features 10 ranked opponents (as of November 13), including four in the top 25.
Following several individual success stories at the ITA Northeast Regional and a clean sweep at the William & Mary Invitational, the Quakers will return to action on Monday, Jan. 20 with a doubleheader against #13 Tennessee and The Citadel in Knoxville, Tenn. The matchup against the SEC powerhouse is the first matchup against an SEC opponent since facing Vanderbilt in 2017. The Quakers will wrap up January with home matchups against Navy for the second time this season on Friday, Jan. 24 and Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 31.
February gets started with a doubleheader against #23 North Carolina State and Drexel on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Quakers will then welcome their toughest out-of-conference opponent when they face off against #6 Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a chance to avenge a 6-1 loss from last year. After participating in the annual ECAC Tournament from Saturday, Feb. 15 – Wednesday, Feb. 19, the Quakers will battle several Pennsylvania universities, facing off against #33 Penn State (Sunday, Feb. 23) andTemple (Wednesday, Feb. 26) before finishing with St. John's (Friday, Feb. 28).
As spring begins, the Quakers will travel to the Sunshine State in March, following a rematch against William & Mary on Saturday, Mar. 7. The Red and Blue will face off against #31 Central Florida (Tuesday, Mar. 10), #34 South Florida (Wednesday, Mar. 11), UNC-Wilmington (Friday, Mar. 13) and Florida Gulf Coast (Saturday, Mar. 14). After finishing up in Florida, the Quakers complete their non-conference schedule with a doubleheader against Old Dominion and Delaware on Sunday, Mar. 22.
The Quakers open Ivy League play on Saturday, Mar. 28 against Princeton, before heading out for three straight road matches against #41 Harvard (Saturday, Apr. 4), #40 Dartmouth (Sunday, Apr. 5) and #59 Cornell (Friday, Apr. 10). One of the most intriguing aspects of the schedule is the opportunity to finish the season with three straight home matches, with the league title potentially on the line. The Quakers will host #16 Columbia (Sunday, Apr. 12), Yale (Saturday, Apr. 18) and Brown (Sunday, Apr. 19) to complete the regular season.
