Men's Soccer Closes Out 2019 Season Saturday at Harvard

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team will close out the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon at Harvard, facing a winless Crimson squad and with a chance to finish the campaign in second place in the Ivy League. Penn has already clinched its best Ivy League record since 2013, when the Quakers went 5-1-1 and won the most recent of their eight Ivy titles.

MATCH DAY 16 - PENN (6-5-4, 2-1-3 Ivy League) at HARVARD (0-13-1, 0-6-0 Ivy)
Saturday, Nov. 16 | 4 p.m. | Jordan Field (Cambridge, Mass.) | Watch (ESPN+) | Live Stats

Series Information
Harvard leads 42-41-5 | Last meeting: 2018 (Penn, 1-0 2OT)

The Quakers have won two in a row over the Crimson and are looking for their first three-match win streak since 2011-13. Last year, Penn ended its season in dramatic fashion when Alex Touche headed home Brandon Bartel's free kick early in the second overtime period to give the Red and Blue at 1-0 win. The last time Penn played in Cambridge, in 2017, the Quakers walked away with a 3-0 victory.

Second Place in Play
Yale has already clinched the Ivy League title and the league's NCAA College Cup berth, but Penn is right in the mix for second place. With nine points entering the weekend, the Quakers are one point behind current second-place Dartmouth, tied with Princeton, and one point ahead of Cornell and Columbia. The Big Green are at Brown and the Tigers host Yale, with both of those matches kicking off at the same time Penn and Harvard kick off. Earlier in the day, at 1 p.m., the Lions and Big Red face each other.

The Fun Fact
If Penn wins on Saturday, the Quakers will finish the 2019 Ivy League season with just one loss (3-1-3). The program finished the 1971 (7-0-0) and 1972 (6-0-1) seasons with no Ivy losses, and have had 10 other one-loss seasons in Ivy play (the most recent coming in the aforementioned 2013 season). This season would be the fifth time the Red and Blue had just one Ivy League loss but did not win the Ivy title.

RPI Update
The Quakers moved up in the NCAA's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) after last weekend's draw with Princeton, to 84th. Overall, the Ivy League has five of its eight teams in the top 95 (Yale 58, Princeton 78, Penn 84, Dartmouth 89, Cornell 95).

Good Times in Overtime
The Quakers have gone to overtime in each of their last four matches, going 2-0-2 in them. Overall, Penn is unbeaten in its last seven overtime matches dating back to last season including victories over Harvard (last season), Drexel and #24 Yale.

Bhangdia's Boot
Joey Bhangdia ranks second in the Ivy League with six goals this season, while tied for first with three game-winning scores. He leads Penn with 12 points, followed by six from Bartel who has two goals and two assists.

Stout Back Line
Penn boasts six shutouts this season, tied for the Ivy League lead with Yale and Cornell, and the Quakers' 0.80 goals-against average (13 goals allowed in 15 matches) is second only to the champion Bulldogs. Sophomore goalkeeper Dane Jacomen ranks second in the Ivy League in GAA and third in save percentage.

Scouting the Crimson
Harvard will celebrate Senior Day prior to Saturday's match as they recognize Taner Dogan, Matthew Glass and Asa Silverman. The Crimson lead the Ivy League and are third nationally in saves per game (6.71), and Alfred Perez boasts a .692 shot accuracy mark which is tops among Ivy players and second nationally. Perez, Willem Ebbings and Duncan Sutherland share the team lead with two goals each.
