Bryzgalova Reaches Quarters, Doubles Excels at ITA All-Americans

TULSA – On the national stage, Iuliia Bryzgalova and Marija Curnic excelled for the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships this week. Bryzgalova toppled three top-25 players en route to reaching the quarterfinal – the best run in program history – and clinch a berth in November's Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Calif.

Bryzgalova and Curnic won three matches to qualify for the main draw and then took down the 11th-ranked duo in the country 8-6.

SINGLES DRAW | DOUBLES DRAW

Bryzgalova, Penn's representative in singles competition, raced through two rounds of qualifying, taking down No. 61 Kolie Allen from Ohio State and then No. 67 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat from Oklahoma State to qualify for the 64-player main draw. Bryzgalova is the first Quaker to reach the tournament's main draw since 2010.

In the main draw, which began on Wednesday, Oct. 9, Bryzgalova toppled No. 23 McCartney Kessler 7-6 (3), 6-2 to advance to the round of 32, where she then took down Duke's No. 5 Kelly Chen in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3).  With a spot in the quarterfinal on the line, Bryzgalova battled another Tobacco Road player in UNC's No. 12 Cameron Morra on Friday and won in three sets yet again, winning 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5). By virtue of reaching the quarterfinal, Bryzgalova booked a ticket to the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. in November. As one of the final eight, Bryzgalova fell to 14th-ranked Ashley Lahey, the 2018 NCAA Singles Championships runner-up, 6-4, 6-3.

Bryzgalova entered the tournament as the No. 63rd-ranked player in the country, following her Ivy League Player of the Year freshman campaign last year. Bryzgalova led a potent singles lineup at No. 1 for the Quakers and capped her rookie season at 28-4, including a 15-1 record in dual matches and a perfect 5-0 stint in Ivy League action. Against top-125 opponents, Bryzgalova went 3-2 in the spring, including a win over No. 27 Valeriya Zeleva of UCF. Of Bryzgalova's 15 dual-match wins, all of them came in straight sets and she didn't drop a single set in league play.

In doubles, Bryzgalova and Curnic, the 59th-ranked duo in country, won three matches in the qualifying rounds, beating teams from Wyoming, Boise State and Ole Miss in order to advance to the tournament's main draw.

In the main draw, Bryzgalova and Curnic opened the 32-team tournament with a win over seventh-seeded Alter/Rice from Arkansas. The Razorback pair began the tournament as the 11th-ranked duo in the country. In the second round, though, Bryzgalova and Curnic lost to No. 31 Mattel/Stolmar from UCF.
