PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team swept Delaware last weekend and looks to continue its hot start to the season, hosting neighborhood rival Drexel at Hecht Tennis Center on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
Doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Iuliia Bryzgalova leads the Quakers with 14 singles wins this year, after winning the Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational and advancing to the ITA Northeast Regional final in the fall. She won again on Saturday against Delaware and banked a doubles win at No. 2 with OJ Singh.
The No. 1 doubles pair of Marta Kowalska and Marija Curnic also reached the ITA Northeast Regional final in the fall and won convincingly on Saturday, 6-0, before they took victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Ashley Zhu and Singh also won their singles matches in straight sets against the Blue Hens.
DEFEATING THE DRAGONS
Penn is 13-0 all-time against Drexel and, since the 2013-14 season, the Quakers have combined to outscore their University City foe 30-5. The Dragons enter Hecht 1-1 this season after splitting matches at the VCU Invitational, falling to the host Rams before beating Campbell in Richmond, Va.
