WACO, Texas - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team played its first road match of the season on Sunday, falling just short to No. 11 Baylor.
Kevin Zhu earned the lone win for the Quakers at No. 3 singles.
How it Happened
The Quakers got off to a rough start in doubles going down early breaks in all three matches.
Kyle Mautner and
Dmitry Shatalin went up against the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the nation, taking two games, but eventually falling 6-2.
In singles,once again the Red and Blue got down early, but showed great mental toughness in the second sets. After falling 6-2, Mautner led No. 33 ranked Johannes Schretter 4-2 in the second before eventually losing 7-5.
Shatalin lost 6-1 in the first, but lost by just one break in the second, 6-4.
Noah Makarome played tough at five singles going up against Constantin Frantzen who is ranked No. 105 in the ITA. Makarome fell 6-3 in the first and was on serve late in the second before going down 7-5.
The lone win of the day game at No. 3.
Kevin Zhu had a slow start once again, but as he did on Friday, he fought back to level the match at a set apiece by taking the second set, 7-5. The freshman then took the decider by the convincing score of 6-2.
What's Next
Penn is back at home on Friday when they take on Cleveland State and Liberty at Hecht Tennis Center beginning at 1:00 p.m.
