PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team began its spring season Saturday morning. The Quakers began the season how they left off last year, playing well at home as they swept Navy, 7-0, at Hecht Tennis Center.
How it Happened
The Quakers got off to a strong start in doubles.
Edoardo Graziani and
Kevin Zhu got the early break of serve at number two and didn't look back. The freshman duo went on to win by the convincing scoreline of 6-2. Clinching the doubles point for Penn was another freshman doubles team. Jason Hildenbrandt and
Jonah Jurick got earned a late break to and served out the set to win, 6-3.
In singles, once again in was Graziani who set the tone early. The freshman got out to an early break and went on to win ins straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. With Graziani's win at two, the Quakers were halfway to winning the match, up 2-0.
Noah Makarome earned a straight set win of his own to put Penn within one match of victory and then it was senior
Dmitry Shatalin who womn 6-2, 6-3 at number four to clinch the match. At Penn's number one spot,
Kyle Mautner picked up where he left off during the fall. Mautner put up a 10-3 fall record and came out with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on Saturday.
Zhu fought back from an early one set deficit. The freshman lost the opener 3-6, but came back to win the second, 6-1 before taking the decider 6-4.
Penn hits the road on Sunday as the team will fly to Waco, Texas for a match with Baylor on Monday.
