PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team defeated Temple, 3-0, on Sunday through a pair of goals from
Alexa Schneck and a goal and an assist from
Erin Kelly.
The Quakers came out the gates and immediately started piling pressure on the Temple goal. Penn was awarded a corner three minutes into the game.
Erin Kelly sent the ball in to
Paige Meily at the top of the circle. Meily hit a hard pass to
Alexa Schneck, who tipped it home.
Penn continued to pressure the Temple goal as the first half progressed. Kelly and Schneck had a shot blocked and a shot saved minutes after the goal occurred.
The Quakers continued to possess the ball in Temple's half of the field. Schneck found space in the circle but her shot was blocked.
Julia Russo fired a shot on the rebound, but it was blocked as well.
Penn forced the Temple goalkeeper to make a series of point blank saves as the half went on.
Madison Jiranek utilized some fancy stick work to beat three Temple defenders and launched a shot on goal, but the keper reacted well to make the save.
Just before the end of the half, Penn earned a corner.
Lily Clarkson found Schneck on the left side of the circle, but Schneck's shot bounced just wide of the goal.
The second half saw much of the same offensively for the Quakers. From the jump,
Rachel Mirkin fired a shot just wide. The Quakers earned a corner shortly after the Mirkin shot.
Erin Kelly passed to Meily at the top of the box, but Meily's shot was blocked.
The Quakers earned their third corner of the game minutes later. Russo received the ball at the top of the circle and got off a rocket of a shot, but the Temple keeper did well to keep the score at 1-0.
Penn finally found their breakthrough in the 51st minute. The Red and Blue flew down the field after dispossessing a Temple player.
Jordyn Thies crossed the ball into Kelly who was wide open in the middle of the circle. Kelly hit a low shot between the keeper's legs to put Penn up, 2-0.
In the 60th minute, Penn extended their lead through Schneck's second goal of the game, which came on their ninth corner. Kelly passed to Schneck at the left side of the circle. Schneck fired a shot low to the near post to seal the game for Penn.
The Quakers possessed the ball for most of the remainder of the game to earn their fifth win of the season, and their second shutout of the season. The Penn defensive unit allowed one shot for the entire game.
The Quakers now sit at 5-5 with a 1-1 Ivy League record. They hit the road next week as they travel to Hanover to face Dartmouth.
