PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team was handed a narrow, 2-1 loss to No. 12 Harvard after a late goal by the Crimson Saturday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field.
Both teams were unable to generate much offense in the first half. Harvard had the only three shots of the period, but did not register one on goal.Â
Harvard came out in the second half with more urgency on offense. In the 38th minute, Tessen Huibregtsen broke into the box and fired a shot which was saved by
Ava Rosati. However, the rebound fell to the stick of Bente van Vlijmen and she tucked it into the Penn goal.Â
Minutes later, the Quakers leveled the score on their first corner of the game.
Erin Kelly sent the ball to Page Meily at the top of the circle, and she hit a hard pass to
Alexa Schneck who re-directed the ball into the Harvard net. The goal was Schneck's second of the season. She now leads the Quakers with seven points.
Penn was awarded its second corner of the game minutes later. This time, Meily passed the ball out to
Julia Russo but her shot went wide.Â
The game continued for another 15 minutes with no clear-cut chances for either side.
With seven minutes to go,
Sofia Palacios's pass hit a Harvard stick and a foul was called against the Quakers. The Crimson broke down the field quickly, and then Kiley Allen smacked a pass into the circle which hit off the stick of Natalie Sicher. The ball looped over Rosati's head and into the net.
Harvard closed out the game with some lockdown defensive play after that to win, 2-1.
The Quakers will look to bounce back quickly as they host City Six rivals, Temple, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
