Volleyball Falls to Princeton in Straight Sets at Palestra

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team put up a valiant third-set effort in an attempt to get back into its match with two-time defending Ivy champion Princeton, but after winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-19 the Tigers pulled out a 28-26 win in the third set to gain the sweep at the Palestra.

Match Notes
*Madison Goldstein and Parker Jones tied for team-high honors with 12 kills, and Jones also had 11 digs for a double-double.

*Caroline Furrer led the Quakers with 19 digs, while Grace James had 33 assists to lead the club.

How It Happened
Princeton scored the first two points of the first set and expanded the lead to 7-3 early. Penn got back within two points, at 9-7, but the Tigers scored five of the next seven points to make it 14-9. Unfortunately, the Quakers could not get any closer than four points after that as the set ended in Princeton's favor, 25-18.

Penn had a 3-0 lead that stretched to 5-2 early in the second set, but Princeton roared back with a strong attack game to score six of the next seven points and take an 8-6 lead. The Tigers then doubled the Quakers up over a few points, moving their lead to 14-9, and extended it to 18-11. The Red and Blue responded with seven of the next nine points, getting within 21-18 when Taylor Cooper rocked a pair of kills. Princeton's Maggie O'Connell and Madison Goldstein traded kills to 22-19, but another Tigers kill and a pair of Penn attack errors gave Princeton the set, 25-19.

The third set brought out the best in both teams, as they battled over several lengthy points and needed extra points to decide matters. Overall, the Quakers and Tigers were tied a staggering 16 times in the set.

Princeton was up 3-0, but Penn got back to 4-4 and then the teams were tied at 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8. The Tigers reeled off five of the next six points, but once again the Quakers came back with a four-point run to knot things up at 13-13. The back-and-forth action continued as the teams traded points to be tied at 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 before a pair of Goldstein kills gave Penn a 22-20 advantage. Princeton used a kill and a Penn attack error to draw level at 22-22, but a Parker Jones kill made it 23-22.

Princeton got a pair of kills by Clare Lenihan to go up 24-23 and set up match point, but Jones had another kill to extend the match and then a Princeton ball-handling error gave the Quakers set point. However, two-straight attack errors again tilted the score in Princeton's favor at 26-25, before a Tigers service error tied the score at 26-26. At that point, Princeton's Devon Peterkin recorded a kill and Lenihan served up an ace to put the match away.
