Volleyball Concludes Non-Conference Play at Mountaineer Classic

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (3-5) concludes its nonconference schedule this weekend at the Mountaineer Classic in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Quakers will take on Morehead State (11 a.m.) and Wake Forest (3 p.m.) on Friday before wrapping with host West Virginia (11 a.m.) on Saturday. 

* Previewing Penn

- The Quakers come in having defeated Delaware State, 3-1, on Tuesday. Parker Jones led the team in kills with 18 while Kylie Kulinski distributed a season-high 48 assists. Penn will look to continue its momentum heading into conference play against Princeton next week. 

* Coach's Corner

- Head coach Iain Braddak got his first home win at The Palestra on Tuesday against Delaware State. Braddak's defensive mindset has seen an immediate impact on the floor as the Quakers' 1.9 blocks per set is an improvement over last season through eight matches. 

* Sophomore Standouts

- Sophomores Raven Sulaimon and Parker Jones lead the team in kills this season. Sulaimon heads the charge with 89 on the year, while Jones had used double-doubles in each of the last three matches to increase her 2018 total to 66. 

* Featured Freshmen

* Setter, Kylie Kulinski, has started each of the last three matches and has 40 or more assists in two of her three starts. Her 9.85 assists-per-set lead the team and her 48 assists against Delaware State is a season-high. 

* Daniela Fornaciari pounded the game-winning kill against Delaware State on Tuesday. Her 30 blocks this season lead the Ivy League. 

* Carmina Raquel ranks third on the team in digs with 67. She has ten or more digs in four matches this season which includes a season-high 13 against Radford. 

* Ace in the Hole

Caroline Furrer leads the team with nine aces which is tied for second most in the Ivy League. She also leads the team in digs with 91.

* Friday's match against Morehead State will be the first meeting between the Quakers and Eagles in 18 years. In the first and only meeting, the Red and Blue narrowly edged Morehead State at The Palestra in three tight sets, 17-15, 16-14, 17-15. 

* Previewing Morehead State

- The Eagles are 8-2 this season with their only losses coming to Marshall and Wright State. Morehead State also played Saint Francis earlier this season defeating the Red Flash, 3-0. On the offensive side, Preseason All-OVC member, Laurne Rokey is second on the team in kills with 96. In the middle, Maddie Fella leads the team in blocks with 37.

* After starting 0-6 which included a meeting with No. 5 Nebraska, the Deacons have won their last three against Elon, Georgia Southern, and Akron. Head Coach Bill Ferguson returns for his third season at the helm of the program along with 14 players from last year's squad which finished 11th in the ACC.

* The Red and Blue and West Virginia last played in 2010 in Fullerton, California. Penn took that match in straight sets, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21. 

Previewing West Virginia

* The Mountaineers took two of three at the Florida Gulf Coast tournament last weekend after losing their previous four. West Virginia has played the No. 1 and No. 9 teams in the country this season.
