PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team begins its 2018 Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) season this weekend on the road Saturday evening against Mansfield at 7:10 p.m.
The Matchup
The Quakers have faced the Mountaineers every season since the creation of Mansfield's sprint football program in 2008. Penn is 10-0 against Mansfield in that time and won last year's meeting, 35-13.
Previewing Penn
*Coach Bill Wagner enters his 49th season as Penn's sprint football head coach. Wagner has won five CSFL championships over his career. The Quakers are coming off a 6-2 season in 2017 and were crowned the CSFL South Division champion. Penn lost the inaugural CSFL Championship Game to Army, 10-0.
*Jenkins appeared in seven games last season, finishing with 17 total touchdowns (11 pass, 6 rush) in his first season as starting quarterback.
*Klaus appeared in all eight games last season and finished second in the CSFL in rushing yards and touchdowns. Klaus rushed for 604 yards on 129 carries and set a single-season career high with nine rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in 19 receptions for 251 yards and one touchdown.
*Three second-team All-CSFL selections – junior OL Matt McDermott, senior DB Tom Console, and sophomore DB Michael Doulong – and two honorable mentions, senior WR Aidan Kelly and junior TE Matteo Murgia, round out Penn's returning CSFL All-League selections.
*Console ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 32.5 and second in interceptions with three.
*Coach Wagner named Console, Jenkins, Klaus, and Guiseppe Bevacqua as his team captains for the 2018 season.
*The Quakers welcome eight incoming freshmen to the sprint football roster in 2018.
*Drew Gardner was named to Wagner's coaching staff this offseason, taking over as an assistant coach.
