Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Splits Day Two of Georgetown Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (2-2) finished day two of the Georgetown Classic like they did day one —with an even split. The Quakers began with a 3-0 sweep of Norfolk State before falling to UNC, Wilmington 3-0. The Quakers come home to The Palestra next weekend for the Valley Forge Sports Invitational.

Match One Notes - Box Score

* Raven Sulaimon finished with double-digit kills for the third consecutive match. The sophomore was the only Quaker with double-digit kills.

* For the second-time in three matches, Grace James finished with 30+ assists. The senior dished out 33 in the match.

* Parker Jones once again played a more defensive role. She finished with 11 digs which led the team.

* The Quakers dominated at the net finishing with eight blocks to the Spartans' two. Madison Goldstein and Daniela Fornaciari led the way with six.

* The Red and Blue finished with a .400 attack percentage to Norfolk State's .058.

Match Two Notes - Box Score

* Madison Goldstein led the team in kills with eight. That matches a career high.

* Penn got out-aced 10-1 against the Seahawks.

* The Quakers led 17-14 in the second game before UNCW went on an 11-0 run.

How it Happened

The Quakers began Saturday right where they left off Friday night. After pulling out a dramatic five-game victory against Georgetown, Penn kept that momentum going against Norfolk State. Freshman Daniela Fornaciari led the team with two kills during a key 7-0 run to put the Red and Blue up 9-6 and they never looked back. Tied at 18, the Quakers took seven of the next ten points and secured the opening game with a kill from Raven Sulaimon

Another early run in the second game — a 6-0 run —the Quakers took control. Madison Goldstein and Sulaimon put the game away with back-to-back kills as Penn took a commanding 2-0 lead. Penn closed out the sweep to win its second straight match taking the third game 25-19.

The Red and Blue then fell victim of a sweep against UNC, Wilmington. The Quakers fell behind 15-4 early in the opener and were unable to recover losing 25-14.

Penn looked to bounce back in the second after losing the first game and looked to be on its way to doing so. Freshman Margaret Planek gave her team the lead with a kill to go up 12-11 halfway through the game. The Quakers extended the lead to 17-14, but then lost 11 straight points to go down 25-17 and 2-0. The Seahawks completed the sweep winning the third game 25-16.

What's Next

The Quakers will play their first matches at the Palestra next weekend for the Valley Forge Invitational. Penn will play three matches over two days against Radford, Saint Francis (PA), and Lehigh.
