PHILADELPHIA – A trio of experienced All-Ivy players have been named captains of the University of Pennsylvania football team with the selection of Tommy Dennis, Nick Miller and Sam Philippi by their teammates.
 
"The three captains selected by our players for the 2018 season bring a wealth of experience and championship pedigree to our program," said George A. Munger Head Coach of Football Ray Priore. "They know what it takes to succeed at a high level and have done so from the moment they stepped foot on campus. We've have outstanding leadership groups during their time at Penn and they are ready to carry that responsibility forward."
 
The group has combined for five All-Ivy selections during their Penn careers, and each has been a part of two Ivy League championships during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
 
As a group, they've appeared in 80 career games – with 70 combined starts to their credit.
 
Miller enters 2018 as a STATS FCS Preseason All-American and a member of the Watch List for the Buck Buchanan Award as FCS Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, he was a first-team All-Ivy selection and finalist for the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. A two-time All-Ivy selection, Miller has appeared in 30 career games.
 
Philippi has twice been named second-team All-Ivy at defensive back while starting all 30 career games at safety. He is averaging 50.3 tackles-per-season over his career and has six career interceptions.
 
Tommy Dennis has started each of the last 20 games on the offensive line for the Quakers, earning second-team All-Ivy honors at left tackle in 2017 following 10 starts at right tackle in 2016. Last season, Dennis was on the field for all 667 offensive snaps and he did not allow a sack over 269 pass attempts by Penn quarterbacks.
 
The Quakers open the 142nd season of Penn Football on September 15 against Bucknell. Kickoff with the Bison is set for 3 p.m.
