WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight crews completed action at the EARC Sprints, which took place Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Second Varsity 8 beat its seed for Sunday by winning the Third Final and taking 13th overall, while the Varsity 8 matched its seed by taking tenth overall.
Varsity 8
Penn took fourth in its heat, which allowed the Quakers to advance to the Petite Final in the afternoon. The Quakers were clocked in 5:50.439 over Quinsigamond's 2,000-meter course, just missing out on third place as Wisconsin edged them by three-tenths of a second (5:50.139). Penn then took fourth in the Petite Final to finish tenth overall, timed in 6:07.922. Syracuse won the PF in 6:02.678, ahead of Dartmouth and Cornell. Wisconsin was fifth behind Penn, while George Washington was sixth.
Second Varsity 8
Penn took fifth in its morning heat, which put the Quakers in the Third Final in the afternoon. The Red and Blue then took first in the Third Final to place 13th overall, finishing ahead of its seed (14). Penn's time in its heat was 5:58.254, and then the Quakers clocked 6:06.940 in its final to defeat Columbia by nearly two seconds. Georgetown, Holy Cross and Rutgers were also in that final.
Penn will now prepare for the IRA Regatta, which takes place June 1-3 on Mercer Lake in nearby West Windsor, N.J.
