PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team shot out early and held on strong to earn its first Ivy League victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, taking down Cornell 4-3 at the Hecht Tennis Center. The win improves the Quakers to 8-10 overall and 1-2 in the Ancient Eight.
The Red and Blue earned quick momentum from a solid doubles point, notching a quick 6-1 victory on court three from
Marija Curnic and
Marta Kowalska before
OJ Singh and
Jimena Rodriguez-Benito sealed the 1-0 lead with a 6-2 win on court two.
Penn continued its momentum in singles play, winning the first set on courts two, three, four, five and six. The freshman, Curnic, was the first to finish, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 result on court five to push the Quakers ahead 2-0. Inserted back into the lineup, senior
Ria Vaidya dropped a tight 6-4, 6-4 match on court one for the Big Red's first win of the afternoon, but Singh kept Cornell at arms length distance, giving Penn a 3-1 advantage behind a 6-3, 7-5 victory on court six over Michelle Wang.
Sophomore
Ashley Zhu proved to be the clincher for the Quakers, defeating Cornell's Mariko Iinuma on court two to seal the overall win with the fourth point of the day for the home team. Penn dropped its remaining two matches in three sets.
Penn continues Ivy League action next weekend, traveling to both Brown and Yale.
