PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania softball team (10-15, 6-5 Ivy) earned its second straight Ivy League series win on Friday at Penn Park with a sweep of Yale on Friday.
Mason Spichiger and

Moved ahead due to a forecast of inclement weather on Saturday, Penn took Game One, 7-2, before pulling ahead late in Game Two, 5-1. The Red and Blue will finish the series against the Bulldogs on Saturday at 2 p.m., rather than the original 12:30 p.m. Sunday time.

How it Happened
Prior to the doubleheader on Friday, the Quakers and Penn Athletics honored head coach
Leslie King for her 300th career win on Wednesday when the team defeated Villanova, 5-3. Winning would end up being a common theme on the day, as the Red and Blue ended up taking the first two games against Yale, clinching the series.Â
Pederson got the Quakers off to a good start coming right out and tripling to right field for her 11th consecutive game with a hit. The very next batter,
Jessica England, singled to bring Pederson home and give Penn a quick 1-0 lead.Â
The 1-0 score did not hold for long.
Mason Spichiger, while solid in the circle all afternoon, gave up her ninth home run of the year which tied the score at one. The senior retired the side after that, catching the batter looking for her first of what would be a season-high seven strikeouts on the day.Â
In the bottom of the second, Pederson remained perfect in the game with her second hit to bring home
Katie Petroski and put her team up 2-1. The Quakers took the lead and never looked back.Â
Spichiger threw four consecutive scoreless innings while leaving the bases loaded twice to continue her Ivy dominance.
Petroski extended the lead in the fourth. The senior brought home three as she homered to right for the first time since her sophomore season. Pederson and England scored in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-1.Â
Yale scored one run in the seventh, but a strikeout and lineout to second allowed the Quakers to start the series with a 7-2 win.Â
While it was early offense in Game One leading to a nine-run contest, Game Two was a pitcher's duel.
Jennifer Brann opened the game by throwing five-straight scoreless innings and Penn didn't record its first hit until the fourth whenÂ
Jurie Joyner who doubled down the left-field line, scoring Pederson.Â
Like in Game One, the Bulldogs' first run came off of a homer to tie the score in the sixth. However, the tie would not last long. Freshman
Lucy Yang hit her fifth home run of the season to left field in the bottom of the inning, a three-run shot that gave the Quakers a commanding 4-1 lead in what had been a defensive affair up to that point.
Abigail Abramson made it a four-run inning when she crossed the plate on a Yale error to put The Red and Blue up, 5-1.Â
Brann allowed no hits in the top of the seventh, but struck out two of the next three batters to retire the side and clinch the series win.Â
What's Next
The Quakers will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. for game three of the series. The finale was originally scheduled for Sunday, but due to weather improvement, the game has been moved ahead.Â
