Softball Completes Comeback To Sweep Yale

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania softball team (11-15, 7-5 Ivy) made waves in the Ivy League on Sunday. Coming back from six runs down in the first inning, the Quakers took game three against Yale to complete a series sweep. After a 2-4 start, Penn has won four of its last five Ivy games for what is now seven on the season.

Heading into Sunday's games, the Quakers are tied with Harvard with seven Ivy wins on the year. It sets up for what will be an exciting three-games series next weekend in Cambridge as the Red and Blue take on the Crimson.

How it Happened
While winning games one and two put the Quakers in a solid position in the Ivy standings, a win on Saturday would move them up to the top cluster of teams. Looking for their first series sweep on the year, the Red and Blue did not get the start they were hoping for, digging themselves a 6-0 hole in the first inning.

Ciana Curran entered the game for Abigail Abramson in the circle and threw three straight scoreless innings. The freshman gave the Quaker offense time to cut into the early deficit and eventually take and hang on to the lead.

As a whole, six runs seemed like a lot, but Jurie Joyner brought home Pederson in the bottom of the first to chip into the Bulldog lead to five. While it was Yale who went on a scoring splurge in the first, Penn went on their own in the second, putting up eight runs, the most they've scored in an inning this season.

Starting off the rally was Pederson. The junior hit her third triple of the season deep to right center field as three runs came home to score. The hit brought the Quakers within one of what previously seemed like a steep hole. Four batters later, Lucy Yang gave Penn its first lead of the day -- one they would not relinquish -- doubling to center field to bring home Sarah Cwiertnia and Jessica England

The Quakers only recorded four hits, but work at the plate earned them four walks on their way to a 9-6 lead.

Penn would not score another run, but Curran stood strong in the circle throwing two 1-2-3 innings and left two stranded on second and third in the fourth. Coming in to relieve Curran was Spichiger in the sixth. The senior gave up two runs, but most importantly held on to the lead which was now just 9-8.

Spichiger allowed a double on the first batter in the seventh who then advanced to third with just one out. However, the senior pitcher -- who has been dominant in Ivy play this season -- forced back-to-back pop-ups to retire the side and secure her second save of the year and the team's first Ivy sweep.

What's Next
The Quakers will play Drexel at Penn Park on Wednesday. Then, a big Ivy series on the road over the weekend awaits as Penn will travel to Cambridge for a three game series with Harvard.
