Women's Tennis Visits Columbia, Hosts Cornell in Weekend Matches

PHILADELPHIA - Ivy League action is in full swing for the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team, as the Quakers eye a two-match weekend ahead, first traveling to Columbia on Friday, April 6 at 1 p.m., before a home match against Cornell on Sunday, April 8, also at 1 p.m.

The Quakers are coming off a 5-2 defeat at the hands of 42nd-ranked Princeton to open conference action, winning singles matches on courts three and four for their two points on the day. Penn is 7-9 overall on the year, while junior Marta Kowalska leads the squad in singles play with a spring record of 9-2, having won four-straight matches. Freshman Jimena Rodriguez-Benito also got off on the right foot in conference play, earning a victory of her own to break a three-match skid.

Columbia is 9-5 on the year and 1-0 in Ivy League play after defeating Cornell 6-1 to open Ancient Eight action. Penn leads the all-time series against the Lions 27-6, but has dropped two-straight to Columbia following a 4-3 loss last year in Philadelphia and another 4-3 defeat earlier this season at the ECAC Championship at Princeton. There, the Quakers won the doubles point and singles matches from Marta Kowalska and OJ Singh, but were unable to prevail in a three-set match on court one and a two-set double tiebreak match on court three.

Cornell sits 6-8 overall entering the weekend and will battle Princeton on Friday before its match with Penn. The Quakers are 34-6 all-time vs. the Big Red and won last year's meeting on the road against the Ivy League Co-Champion, 4-3.
