Heavyweight Varsity celebrates its first Madeira Cup win since 2007.
ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight crews rowed at Cornell on Saturday, closing out the Cup portion of its 2017-18 schedule by winning the Madeira Cup for the first time since 2007.

Penn's winning time over the 2,000-meter course in the Varsity 8 race was 5:35.8, which nipped Cornell at the line as the Big Red's time was 5:36.3. Georgetown rowed as a guest at Saturday's races and the Hoyas were third in the Varsity 8 race, clocking 5:44.3.

Penn now holds a 36-26 lead in the Madeira Cup series with Cornell, but this was just the Quakers' second win since 2001.

In the Second Varsity 8 race, Penn was second in 5:52.6. Cornell won the race in 5:47.5, while Georgetown was third in 6:07.0.

Penn will now turn its attention to the EARC Sprints, which will take place on Sunday, May 13 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
