How it Happened
From the first pitch on Saturday, the Quakers were determined to bounce back after a tough four game losing streak.
Sam Pederson and
Jessica England each singled to start off and then it was
Jurie Joyner who brought them home hitting her 100th career RBI, this one off a double to deep center field. The Quaker bats continued ot stay hot.
Tabitha Dyer wrapped up what would be the first of two six-run innings hitting her first career home run.Â
The second Red and Blue scoring splurge came in the third.
Sam Pederson drove in a run to go up 7-1 to start it off. Joyner then hit an inside the park home run that was mishandled by the center fielder bringing in three runs and expanding the lead to 12-1.Â
Starting in the opener of her final home series,
Mason Spichiger was as sharp and focused as she could be. The senior allowed one run, a solo shot, but allowed just three hits in five innings of play while striking out four.Â
After a 12-1 win in game one, Penn looked to carry that momentum into game two. It took longer than in game one, but the Quaker bats finally got going in the fourth. With the bases loaded,
Molly Oretsky brought in two runs to go up 3-1. Dyer hit her fourth RBI of the day to bring in a third run in the inning and then a double-steal allowed a fourth to score as the Quakers went up 5-0.Â
Abramson followed Spichiger's lead in the circle in game two. The freshman allowed six hits, but stranded seven runners on base including five in scoring position. While the freshman pitched an outstanding game, the defense behind her was just as solid.
Katie Petroski laid out in center field for a diving catch to end the third. In the fifth, it was
Jessica England who threw out the runner from third coming home as Joyner got the tag at the plate.Â
A run in the fourth and fifth pushed the lead to seven. A quick three up, three down inning in the seventh assured Abramson her first career complete game shut-out and the Quakers the series win. They will go for their second Ivy Sweep on Sunday.Â
What's Next
The Quakers will go for the sweep against Cornell at 12:30 on Sunday. Penn will also celebrate senior day as they honor the careers of
Jurie Joyner,
Molly Oretsky,
Katie Petroski, and
Mason Spichiger. With Dartmouth's two losses against Harvard on Saturday, the Red and Blue will go into Sunday tied for the second most wins in Ivy play.
