PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision on the road at Brown Saturday afternoon, despite a perfect day in both singles and doubles from
Marta Kowalska and
Marija Curnic. The Quakers drop to 8-11 overall and 1-3 in Ivy League play with the loss and will round out the weekend at Yale Sunday.
The Red and Blue were unable to win their third-straight doubles point, dropping matches on courts one and two as the Bears gained the early momentum. Kowalska and Curnic notched their team-leading ninth doubles victory on the year on court three for Penn.
With only four courts available to play at a time, Penn looked strong to kick off singles action, winning the first set on courts two, three and four. Brown would take a 2-0 lead after a win on court one, but the freshman Curnic gave the Quakers their first point of the day with a straight-sets win on court four, her third win in a row. Both Kowalska and Zhu went battled into three sets on courts two and three, with Kowalska earning a win over Alyza Benotto, and Zhu unable to close out Devon Jack, dropping a tiebreak in the deciding frame.
The bottom two courts doomed Penn, as Brown took both in straight sets to clinch the victory.
Penn is set to face the Bulldogs tomorrow at 1 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
