PHILADELPHIA - The Unversity of Pennsylvania (5-5) women's tennis team is set to head to the West Coast for spring break and will play four matches against California opponents, including a top-10 matchup at Pepperdine. The Quakers start their journey on Sunday, March 4, visiting Loyola Marymount with first serve slated for 2 p.m. EST.
The Red and Blue will play one match every two days while in California, visiting Long Beach State on Tuesday, March 6 following their first contest, before driving to Malibu to face 6th-ranked Pepperdine on Thursday. Penn rounds out the week at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, March 10.
Penn enters the week of play with an overall record of 5-5, and has battled through injury of late without a full lineup. Defending Ivy League Rookie of the Year
Ashley Zhu has led the way for the Quakers in the spring, with an overall record of 6-3, while both
Lina Qostal and
Marta Kowalska boast five wins in singles as well. Penn has also seen success in the pairing of Zhu and Qostal on the doubles court, as the duo is 4-2 at the No. 1 spot on the year.
The Quakers will have their hands full on the outside courts, with Loyola Marymount sitting at 5-2 on the year, featuring the 27th-ranked player in singles and 22nd-rated doubles team in the country. Long Beach State sits at 4-5 on the year, while Pepperdine is rated top-10 as a team, with all six singles players and all three doubles teams littered among the national rankings. The Wave advanced all the way to the ITA National Indoor Championship before falling to North Carolina. UC Santa Barbara is 6-8.
