How it Happened
From the very first pitch it was obvious that the Quaker bats were going to be hot.
Sam Pederson hit just the third triple of her career and the first since her freshman season to get on base right out of the gate. Two batters later,
Sarah Cwiertnia brought the junior as well as
Jessica England home to put Penn up early, 2-0.Â
Jurie Joyner added on to what would be a splurge of first-inning runs as the senior hit the 17th home run of her career and her first of the season to give Penn a 4-0 lead. When all was said and done, the Red and Blue were up 6-0.
In the third, the Quakers added four more runs started by
Tabitha Dyer. The freshman singled up the middle to bring home
Raven Houck. Cwiertnia then hit a sacrifice fly to bring Dyer home as Penn took a commanding 10-1 lead.
Mason Spichiger's dominance in the circle in Ivy League games continued. The senior allowed just four runs on nine hits and left six runners on base against the Bears. Her ERA in Ivy games is just 2.88 as she is 2-2 in conference play.Â
The Quakers brought in three more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 11 before closing out game one with a 13-4 win to take the series opener for the second straight week.Â
In game two, Penn was down early asÂ
Abigail Abramson allowed her fifth home run of the season to put the Quakers down 1-0. It would be the last run she would allow in the next three innings.Â
The Red and Blue finally took the lead in the third inning with the help of Dyer. The freshman brought home Abramson to tie the score at one and then took the lead as she crossed the plate when Cwiertnia knocked home her fifth RBI of the day.Â
Up 3-1 in the fifth, Joyner's successful day at the plate continued. The senior brought in
Sam Pederson to extend the lead to four late in the game. Headed into the sixth, the Quakers led 5-2
Holding a three-run lead going late into the game in the sixth, Penn looked to close the game. Abramson stood strong in the circle stranding runners at first and second in the sixth before a one-tw-three final inning. The freshman pitcher finished the second complete game in her career and earned her second Ivy League win to guarantee Penn the series victory headed into Sunday's finale.
What's Next
The Quakers wrap up play at Brown at 12:30 on Easter Sunday. They will then have a mid-week trip to the suburbs to play Villanova before an Ivy series at home next week against Yale at Penn Park.
