Softball Shut Out by Brown in Series Finale, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (7-15, 4-5 Ivy) was unable to get a series sweep at Brown on Easter Sunday. The Quakers fell 4-0 to the Bears, but still came up with the series win as they took both games on Saturday. Penn will be back in action on Wednesday as it travels to the suburbs to play Villanova before another Ivy home series against Yale next weekend.

Inside the Numbers
* The Quakers scored zero runs for just the third time this season and first time against Brown since 2004
* Penn's four hits were the fewest they've had since playing Florida State earlier this season
* The Red and Blue left six runners on base including the bases loaded in the first inning
* Ciana Curran got her first start of the season in the circle. The freshman allowed two runs in three innings of play
* Sam Pederson extended her hitting streak to 10 games

How it Happened
Playing on Easter Sunday, the Quakers looked to take the season sweep over Brown after they took games one and two on Saturday scoring a combined 19 runs. Early in the first inning, it looked as if Penn might have the same offensive explosion as the day before as walks by Jessica England, Jurie Joyner and Lucy Yang loaded the bases. However, no runner would cross the plate as Abigail Abramson flew out deep to left field to leave the runners stranded.

In the third inning, the Quakers once again threatened to score. With Sam Pederson on second, Sarah Cwiertnia singled up the middle to center field. Pederson rounded third to come home, but an excellent throw from the center fielder beat the junior to the plate and she was tagged out.

Ciana Curran got her first Ivy League start in the circle for Penn. The freshman pitcher threw two scoreless innings on Tuesday against Lehigh and started off strong against the Bears. Curran struck out the first batter on her way to back-to-back scoreless innings. However, the Quakers gave up two runs in the third which brought Mason Spichiger on for the fourth. The senior pitcher allowed two runs of her own in that frame to put Penn down 4-0.

Still down four runs headed into the final two innings, the Quakers were unable to bring any runs home and get anything going offensively. Two straight three-up, three-down innings ended the game and series.
