Sebastianelli Walks Off, Big First Inning Boosts Softball Over Lehigh

PHILADELPHIA - Clare Sebastianelli hit a walk-off home run to left center as the University of Pennsylvania softball team (5-14) used a nine run first inning to take down Lehigh at Penn Park on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Quakers will play away from Penn Park for the first time in nearly a month, traveling to Brown for an Ivy League road trip.

Inside the Numbers

* The win marked the third at Penn Park this season. The Red and Blue are now 3-3 on their home field.

* The Quakers scored nine runs in the first inning. It's the most runs they've scored in an inning this season and most they've scored since April 23, 2016 against Cornell when they scored 10 in a single frame.

* Tuesday's win against Lehigh is the second time this season in which the Quakers won prior to the seventh inning.

* The 12 runs scored by Penn were the most that they've scored this year and most since April 23, 2016 against Cornell.

* The 11 RBI's hit by the Quakers are the most they've hit in a game this season.

* Sebastianelli's walk-off home run was the first of her career.

* The walk-off was the second for the Quakers this season. The last one came on a Sarah Cwiertnia single in the sixth inning against Dartmouth to go up 8-0.

* Jurie Joyner went 4/4 at the plate with 3 RBI's. Both of which lead the team.

* Jennifer Brann lead the Quakers in the circle pitching three strikeouts in two innings of work.

* Ciana Curran pitched two scoreless innings.

How it Happened

The Red and Blue came into Tuesday looking for a win after back-to-back close losses to Dartmouth to close the weekend. It's safe to say they could not have asked for a better start.

Jurie Joyner had her most successful outing at the plate this season and got the bats going bringing in Sarah Cwiertnia and Jennifer Bran to go up an early 2-0.

The Quakers' scoring in the first inning was far from over.

Penn went nine straight batters without getting an out that included five consecutive hits with Molly Oretsky, Sarah Ketring, Lucy Yang, Stephanie Reheuser, Sebastianelli, and Jessica England joining in on the action.

When it was all over, the Quakers had taken a 9-0 lead to start the game, the most they've scored in a single inning since 2016 against Cornell.

Lehigh cut into the lead with a two run home run to make it 9-3, but the Mountain Hawks never came within reach.

In the bottom of the sixth with Reheuser on base after walking for the third time, Sebastianelli took her 1-1 pitch and knocked it out of the park and into deep left center. It was the first home run of her young career, coming in walk-off fashion, as Penn took a nine run lead after the fifth to end the game.

What's Next

Penn heads on their first Ivy League road trip as the Quakers travel to Providence to play Brown.
