Softball Goes Down to Dartmouth 3-1 in Series Finale

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania softball team (4-14, 2-4 Ivy) came up just short against Dartmouth, 3-1, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. Mason Spichiger threw another masterpiece with six scoreless innings, but the Quaker bats couldn't get going. Penn will be back in action on Tuesday against Lehigh to wrap up an eight-game homestand.

Inside the Numbers
- Penn's lone run came on a ground-out single by Tabitha Dyer to bring in Molly Oretsky

- The Red and Blue had more hits than The Big Green, 7-4, but left eight runners on base.

- Mason Spichiger had back-to-back games with six scoreless innings, bringing her weekend total to 12. The only runs that she gave up was a three-run homer.

- The home run given up by Spichiger was the seventh that she has allowed this season.

- The senior pitcher had six strikeouts on Sunday which marked a season high.

- Kayla Ketring was the only Quaker with more than one hit.

How it Happened
Starting for the second time in the three-game series, Mason Spichiger entered the circle on Sunday after pitching her second career complete-game shutout the day before on her way to her first victory of the season. The senior came out with the same success as she had the day before, retiring the first seven batters including three strikeouts.

Penn took the lead in the second inning after Molly Oretsky led off with a single to right field, then advanced to third on another single by Kayla Ketring. Tabitha Dyer brought her home with a groundout to put the Quakers up 1-0 early.

Unfortunately it would be the only run that The Red and Blue would score on the day as they left eight runners on base which included runners in scoring position on five separate occasions.

The Quakers lost the lead in the top of the sixth when Spichiger allowed her seventh home run of the season with one out. That put Penn down, 3-1.

Penn had the tying run at the plate in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Lucy Yang walked and advanced to second, but back-to-back outs retired the side. One inning later, Sam Pederson advanced to third after she doubled; however, England grounded out to put two outs on the board. Sarah Cwiertnia then popped to the shortstop to end the game.

What's Next
The Quakers will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Lehigh in the last of eight straight games at Penn Park. They will then travel to Brown for their first Ivy road trip this weekend.
