Women's Basketball Opens WNIT vs. UAlbany on Friday

PHILADELPHIA - For the sixth-straight year, the University of Pennsylvania (21-8, 11-3 Ivy) women's basketball team is taking its talents to the postseason. The Quakers earned an automatic bid to the WNIT, their second appearance all-time in the tournament. Penn welcomes UAlbany, the second-place finisher in the regular season from the America East Conference, to The Palestra on Friday for a 7 p.m. tip.

In the Series vs. UAlbany: Second Meeting
The Quakers and the Great Danes have met just one time in program history, with Penn holding a 1-0 lead in the all-time series. The teams' only meeting came on Jan. 8, 2001, a 64-51 victory for the Red and Blue on the road. This is the first game between the two at The Palestra.

Last Time Out: L, 34-63 vs. Princeton (March 11, 2018 - Ivy League Tournament Championship)
  -  The Quakers advanced to the Ivy League Tournament Championship for the second time in as many seasons after a 57-52 victory over Harvard in the semifinals. Penn was unable to grab the trophy however, coming up short in the final game of the weekend against Harvard. Michelle Nwokedi was the lone player from Penn in double figures with 13 points.

Scouting the Great Danes
UAlbany enters the first round of the WNIT with an overall record of 24-7, including a 12-4 mark in the America East. The Great Danes entered the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed but were upended by Hartford in the semifinals. UAlbany is led by first-team All-America East member Jessica Féquière who averages 17.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Against the America East Conference
Coach McLaughlin owns a 5-2 mark against teams from the America East, but has lost his last two games against the league, both against Binghamton.

Penn in the Postseason
Prior to this school-record stretch of six-straight postseason appearances, Penn had never been to the postseason in back-to-back years. In 2013, Penn posted the first two postseason wins in program history with home wins over Howard (65-60) and Fairfield (49-48) in the opening two rounds of the Women's Basketball Invitational. Penn then lost in the semifinals at Detroit, 71-68. The following season, the Red and Blue led fifth-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by as many as 15 in the first half (32-17), and seven at halftime (38-31), but ultimately fell, 79-61. In 2014, Penn earned its first-ever WNIT berth and victory with a home win over Hofstra before a close second-round loss at The Palestra to Big 5 rival Temple. The 2015-16 Quakers earned the No. 10 seed for the NCAA Tournament and fell to the University of Washington, 65-53, in College Park, Md. in the First Round. Last year, Penn entered the NCAA Tournament as a 12 seed, and at one point led No. 5 Texas A&M by 21 in the fourth quarter before getting edged by the Aggies, 63-61.

Magic Number: 60
The statistic that may most indicate a Penn win or loss? 60 points. Penn has won 84 of its last 85 regular season games when scoring at least 60 points. Since head coach Mike McLaughlin took over at Penn, the Quakers are 114-11 (.912) when they reach that number (86-3 over the last four seasons). In comparison, the Quakers are just 40-97 (.291) when they've scored less than 60 points under Coach McLaughlin. The trend continues defensively. Over the last seven seasons, the Red and Blue are 28-52 (.350) when allowing 60 points or more. But when holding opponents under that number, the Quakers hold a healthy winning record of 124-30 (.805).
