Women's Tennis Gets Taste of Ivy Play at ECAC Tournament

PHILADELPHIA - Think of it as an appetizer before the main course. The University of Pennsylvania (2-1) women's tennis team will get its first look at its Ivy League competition this weekend, taking part in the ECAC Championship in Princeton, N.J., with action beginning on Friday, Feb. 9 and concluding with a third match of the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 11. The tournament will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.

The Quakers open play with a match against Brown at 11 a.m. on Friday. Penn will then play the winner/loser of Princeton and Harvard before a final match against one of the four other Ivy teams in the opposite quadrant of the bracket.

The Red and Blue enter the weekend with a 2-1 record on the year, boasting wins over Furman and Georgetown with a loss to fourth-ranked Georgia. Lina Qostal, Jimena Rodriguez-Benito, Ria Vaidya and Ashley Zhu all picked up victories in singles play last time out against the Hoyas, and Rodriguez-Benito leads the squad with a perfect 2-0 record this spring. Penn is still seeking its first doubles points of the year, having only captured one victory in double play from Qostal and Zhu.

Penn finished last season 4-3 in the Ivy League, with wins over Cornell, Brown, Yale and Harvard. Four of Penn's Ivy League matchups were decided by 4-3 margins last season.
