Wrestling Hosts No. 12 Cornell and Columbia on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – Fresh off a thrilling rally at Harvard where the Quakers claimed a last-match victory following a win from Tyler Hall at heavyweight, the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team (8-5) competes in its final home dual meets of the season on February 10 as the Quakers host No. 12 Cornell (9-2) and Columbia (3-10) starting at noon in The Palestra on Senior Day.

Notes To Know
  • The Quakers are looking for their first win over the Big Red since a 21-9 win in The Palestra on Feb. 2, 2002. The head coach at that time? Roger Reina.
  • Reina is 6-5-1 against Cornell in his last 12 meetings as head coach.
  • Last year, Cornell defeated Penn, 27-10, in Ithaca. Penn won three of the first five bouts for a 10-7 lead at halftime, but the Big Red won all five after the break to come from behind.
  • There are no expected rematches from last year's dual this weekend.
  • Penn is 72-42-2 in the all-time series against Columbia which dates back to 1906.
  • The Quakers have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
  • Penn went 13-5 against Columbia from 1986-2005 during Reina's first tenure as head coach. He won his final 11 dual meets against the Lions from 1994-2005.
  • Last year, Penn stormed out to a 14-0 lead in the Big Apple, but needed wins from Joe Oliva and May Bethea in the tail end of the dual meet to regain its lead in a 21-20 win. Bethea's major decision at 157 in the penultimate bout of the meet provided the extra point needed for the win.
  • There are four potential rematches from last year's dual against the Lions in the probable lineups. Penn went 3-1 in those bouts, including a pin from Frank Mattiace over Michael Bulkin and Bethea's major decision over Tyrel White.
  • Six of Penn's 13 dual meets have been decided by six points or less. The Quakers are 3-3 in dual meets decided by one match.

Frank Thoughts
No. 9 Frank Mattiace is 2-0 over his career against Cornell's No. 3 Ben Darmstadt … Both of his wins have been major decisions – a 14-5 win at last year's Southern Scuffle and a 14-6 victory this season at the Bearcat Open … Mattiace has handed Darmstadt his only loss of the 2017-18 season, the Big Red wrestler entering this weekend on a 20-match winning streak … Mattiace has won seven matches in a row and 11 of his last 12 … He has four pins and three major decisions over that 12-match span … Mattiace is 10-1 win dual meets this season, outscoring his opponents on the team scoreboard, 44-3 .. Mattiace's career record is 89-39 with 20 career pins.

So We Meet Again…
While the Penn-Cornell dual meet does not feature any rematches from last year's dual, there will be come reconvening of rivalries from earlier this season. In addition to Mattiace-Darmstadt, Joe Velliquette will look to add a second win over Fredy Stroker following an 11-4 decision at the Bearcat Open while Stroker was still competing unattached. Also at the Bearcat Open, May Bethea was edged by Jon Jay Chavez, 5-2.

Senior Day!
Before the start of the Columbia meet, Penn Wrestling will honor the eight members of the Class of 2018 who are representing the Red and Blue for the final time on home mats.
