PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania (3-3) women's tennis team is back home in Philadelphia, set for another busy weekend with three matches scheduled at the Hecht Tennis Center. Action begins on Friday, Feb. 16 at noon, as the Quakers square off against local rivals Drexel. Penn will return to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 18 for a doubleheader day, first facing Xavier at 1 p.m. before battling Hofstra at 5 p.m.
Penn is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the ECAC Championship last weekend, facing three Ivy League foes. The Quakers opened the tournament dropping a 4-2 decision to Brown, before rebounding for a 4-3 victory over Harvard on Saturday. The Red and Blue seemed poised to earn a win over Columbia after winning the doubles point, but couldn't clinch the victory, falling 4-3 to the Lions.
Marta Kowalska and
Ashley Zhu lead the team, each with three wins in singles on the year. In doubles, Penn has won two doubles points on the year, but is 0-2 when doing so. The Quakers found success in the pairing of Kowalska and freshman
Marija Curnic last weekend, as the pair went 2-1 at the ECAC Championship.
The Quakers are 12-0 all-time against their Philadelphia rivals, having never dropped a match to Drexel. Last year, Penn defeated the Dragons 6-1. Drexel enters Friday's match with a 5-1 record on the year, sharing a similar 4-3 victory over Georgetown with the Quakers.
Penn has never faced off vs. the Musketeers on the tennis court. Xavier is 4-3 on the year heading into the weekend, with a matchup vs. Princeton looming on Friday before their trip to Philadelphia.
Similar to Xavier, this is the first meeting between the Pride and Penn in women's tennis. Hofstra is 2-1 on the year entering the weekend, but has two matches on slate before its battle with Penn on Sunday.
