No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Opens 2018 Saturday vs. Delaware

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team opens its 2018 season on Saturday as the Quakers host Delaware at Franklin Field at 3 p.m.
 
The game is part of a season-opening doubleheader for the Penn lacrosse programs as the women's game follows the men's opener against Michigan at noon.
 
Wear Your White!
The team will be wearing its home white uniforms for the opener, and so should you! Show your Penn Lacrosse spirit as part of the "White Out" at Franklin Field.

Penn Opens 2018 Ranked No. 12
The Red and Blue are ranked No. 12 in the Preseason IWLCA Coaches Poll. The Quakers were ranked No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse/Cascade Media Poll entering the season, but have dipped to No. 14 after the first week of play. The same thing happened in the Nike/US Lacrosse Poll, Penn sliding to No. 14 from a preseason ranking of No. 12.
 
Quakers Boast Three Preseason All-Americans
Five Ivy Leaguers were named preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, and the Quakers led all Ancient Eight programs with three selections. Midfielder Alex Condon and defender Katy Junior were second-team preseason All-American selections while attacker Emily Rogers-Healion was an honorable mention choice.
 
Season-Opener Success
Penn is 15-3 in season openers under head coach Karin Corbett dating back to 2000. The Quakers have opened with Delaware the last four seasons and are 4-0 against the Blue Hens to open a campaign.
 
The Attack Is Back
Penn returns 92% of its scoring attack from last season, including each of its top six scorers. The Quakers hit the back of the net 205 times in 2017 – second-highest output by a Penn team all-time, and the returners accounted for 188 of those goals – led by Alex Condon's 44. Caroline Cummings was second on the team with 37 goals – despite missing the final four games of the season with a knee injury. Fifth-year senior Emily Rogers-Healion was third on the team with 35 goals. Gabby Rosenzweig (26 goals) and Erin Barry (24) return for their sophomore seasons after stellar debut campaigns.
 
About Alex
The 2017 Ivy League Midfielder of the Year, Alex Condon is one of the top two-way threats in the country. She currently ranks No. 22 all-time on Penn's career scoring list with 101 career points and No. 13 in career goals scored with 86. After totaling just two points over 13 games in 2015, Condon is averaging 2.7 points over her last 37 games. On the defensive side, she is averaging 1.2 caused turnovers-per-game since 2016 and 1.4 ground balls.
 
Rogers That!
Emily Rogers-Healion returns for a final season on Penn's attack, entering her swan song ranked No. 18 all-time on Penn's career points list with 107 and No. 7 on Penn's all-time assists list with 49. Her 61 points in 2017 were the seventh-most in a single season by a Quaker and her 26 assists were eighth.
 
Junior Enters Junior Season As Leader On Defense
A third-team All-American in 2017, Katy Junior will anchor Penn's defense in 2018. She has 68 ground balls and 57 caused turnovers through 37 career games – averaging 1.8 GBs and 15 CTs over her career.

Sophomore Erin Barry filled the stat sheet in 2017 as a freshman, leading Penn in draw controls (42), while ranking second in ground balls (41) and sixth in points (30).
 
Rose-Colored Glasses
Gabby Rosenzweig was second on the team in assists (16), fourth in goals (26) and seventh in caused turnovers (9) as a freshman. She finished strong in her rookie year, with 17 goals over her final seven games – including a hat trick against Navy in the NCAA Tournament.
 
Welcome Aboard!
The Quakers have added 11 freshmen for the 2018 season, with many expected to jump into key roles. Zoe Belodeau was a three-time US Lacrosse All-American and was ranked No. 18 among incoming freshmen by Inside Lacrosse. Right behind Belodeau at No. 19 was Liv Smith – a defender who earned Under Armour All-American honors in high school. Eight of the 11 newcomers earned at least one All-American nod during their high school careers.
 
Dissecting Delaware
The Blue Hens enters 2018 picked fourth in the CAA Preseason Poll. Delaware is coming off a 2017 season where it posted a 9-8 record and lost in overtime in the CAA semifinals to James Madison. Senior Becky Gohsler was a first-team All-CAA selection last season after scoring 36 goals, winning 43 draws and causing 29 turnovers. Taylor Carpentier had an 8.62 GAA and a .464 save percentage in goal on her way to second-team All-CAA honors. Both were selected as Preseason All-CAA honorees before 2018.
