Battle for First Place Awaits Women's Basketball at Princeton

PHILADELPHIA - A battle for first place awaits the streaking University of Pennsylvania (15-5, 6-1 Ivy) women's basketball team on Tuesday, Feb. 13, as the Quakers make the short trip to Jadwin Gymnasium to face Princeton. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. Winner will gain sole possession of the top spot in the Ivy League with six games remaining in the conference race. Penn has won nine straight and 13 of its last 14 games heading into the midweek matchup.

In the Series vs. Princeton: 85th Meeting
The Quakers have met the Tigers more than any other team in program history, as Tuesday's contest marks the 85th all-time meeting between the two teams. Princeton holds the advantage, 55-29, and won earlier this season in The Palestra, 70-55, breaking a five-game Penn win streak in the series. The Quakers swept all three meetings a season ago, including a 62-57 victory at Jadwin Gymnasium. Penn has walked away with a win in its last two games at Princeton and in three of the last four trips, after an eight-game losing streak there from 2005-2014.

Last Time Out: W, 69-49 vs. Harvard (Feb. 10, 2018)
Michelle Nwokedi had a career day to pace the Quakers, as Penn defeated Harvard soundly at The Palestra, 69-49. The senior captain finished the night with a new high of 30 points, including four 3-pointers. The win for Penn was its ninth in a row, ranking tied for the second-longest winning streak in program history. Nwokedi's 30 points were the most for a Penn player since Keiera Ray scored 31 vs. Harvard on Feb. 15, 2013.
-  Just as impressive as the Quaker offense was the defense against the Crimson, forcing Harvard into 22 turnovers, the most forced against an Ivy League opponent for Penn since Feb. 26, 2013.
-  Penn totaled 12 3-pointers against Harvard, the eighth time this year Penn has hit at least 10 shots from beyond the arc. The Quakers are 8-0 in those games.

Scouting the Tigers
Princeton enters Tuesday's contest tied for the top spot in the Ivy League with Penn, boasting an overall record of 16-4 and a 6-1 mark in conference play, owning a loss at Yale over a week ago. The Tigers are led by the duo of Bella Alarie and Leslie Robinson, both averaging double-figure points for the season, and have gotten a strong contribution from freshman Carlie Littlefield, this week's Ivy League Co-Player and Rookie of the Week. Princeton ranks second in the Ivy League in team defense, allowing 56.2 points per game, just behind Penn's mark of 56.1. Like the Red and Blue, Princeton swept both Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend, taking down the Crimson by 33 before defeating the Big Green by 19. Head Coach Courtney Banghart is in her 11th season with the program.

Ross the Boss
Anna Ross made Penn history this season, breaking the program record for career assists with her 429th dish on Jan. 28, 2018 against Gwynedd Mercy, breaking a record set in 1989 by Cheryl Rath. Ross currently ranks 31st in the nation, averaging 5.6 assists per game. Against Rhode Island, Ross set a new career-high with 10 assists and became the first Quaker since Lauren Pears (Jan. 13, 2007) to notch a double-double on points/assists.

Leading the League
As a team, the Quakers lead the Ivy League in 11 different statistical categories, placing in the top-two in 20 total categories. Penn boasts the top spot in assist-turnover ratio (1.33), assists per game (16.3), fewest turnovers (244), field-goal percentage defense (36.2), offensive rebounds per game (17), rebound margin (6.8), rebounds per game (43.1), scoring defense (56.1), scoring margin (13.3), 3-point field goals per game (8.6), turnovers per game (12.2).

Parker Gaining Steam
Freshman center Eleah Parker has emerged as a key offensive catalyst for the Quakers, at one point boasting 13-straight games in double-figures this season. Parker has won seven Ivy League Rookie of the Week awards, two Player of the Week awards, two USBWA National Freshman of the Week awards and two Big 5 Player of the Week honors.

Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge
The Quakers have partnered with the American Cancer Society for the 3-Point Challenge. During the month of February, fans can pledge to donate a certain dollar amount for every 3-point basket made by the Red and Blue! Penn currently ranks in the top-10 nationally in funds earned. Head to Penn's Pledge It page for info!

Catching Fire
Penn's offense has been scorching at times throughout this season, averaging 69.3 points per game, the most since the 2002-03 team finished with an average of 69.8 points each contest. After scoring 84 against Rhode Island and 82 against VCU, the Quakers notched 80+ points in back-to-back contests for the first time since 2003. The Red and Blue have tied a McLaughlin-era record three times this season, hitting 13 3-pointers against URI, NJIT and Brown, and then by posting 89 points vs. GMU. Leading the charge behind the arc has been Lauren Whitlatch, who ranks 37th in the country, averaging 2.85 three's per game.

Just over a week ago, Penn scored 88 points vs. Brown, its most against an Ivy League opponent since Feb. 2, 2001. In Penn's last game vs. Harvard, senior captain Michelle Nwokedi stepped up offensively, becoming the first player from Penn to notch 30 points since Keiera Ray's 31 against the Crimson on Feb. 15, 2013.

What's Next?
A busy week on the road continues this weekend, as the Quakers make the New York swing, first facing Columbia on Friday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m, before heading west to Ithaca to battle Cornell the following day at the same time.
