PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Pennsylvania (3-3) women's tennis team fell to Columbia in their final match at the ECAC Championship on Sunday. For the Quakers' second-straight match, it came down to the final singles contest to decide a winner.
Marta Kowalska and
Marija Curnic wrapped up the first doubles victory for the Quakers, and the duo of Jimena Rodriguez and
OJ Singh secured the doubles point with their 7-6(5) win, giving Penn the early 1-0 lead. First doubles did not finish, where
Lina Qostal and
Ashley Zhu were deadlocked with Christie Wan and Adi Milstein at 6-6 when play was stopped.
In singles, the Quakers and the Lions jostled for the win until the very end. Kowalska finished first with her commanding straight sets win in fourth singles, 6-4, 6-1. Kowalska's win capped a strong individual weekend for her, going 4-2 overall with losses only in her doubles match Saturday against Harvard, and on Friday in her singles match against Devon Jack from Brown. Columbia responded with two-straight wins by Jennifer Kerr and Ali Pollack on courts five and two, respectively. Singh briefly broke the tie in the sixth position, coming from behind to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Columbia took the point in third singles and all eyes turned to court one, where Qostal was in her third set with Wan in a match that went back and forth. Ultimately, Qostal fell in three sets, the last one going to a tiebreak finish.
The 4-3 loss brings the Quakers to 3-3 on the season. Penn will return home on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. against crosstown rival Drexel and will compete at the Hecht Tennis Center.
